This is a fabulous city, lively and cosmopolitan – a popular refuge for writer and artists – with the most wonderful architectre.

Glass and ceramics are good buys in the shops and it would be a shame to visit this congenial capital without sampling the cafes and restaurants and enjoying a little goulash washed down with the local poison! There again, a trip to Godollo, the lavish Baroque palace and home to Hungary’s beloved Empress Elisabeth, is a great way to discover a little Hungarian history.
