Isn’t there a character – a god-like figure - in the ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ who claimed to have won an award for designing the Norwegian coastline? It’s certainly a good thought, and makes the point that Norway’s fjords are amongst the most spectacular and beautiful places on earth. Even the capital, Oslo, although some way south of the fjords proper, occupies a stunning location best approached from the sea.

But there really is more to Norway than scenery. Oslo itself is a cracking modern city steeped in its maritime past yet with the odd trick up its sleeve like the impressive and slightly ou tres Vigeland Park, full of extraordinary statues. Elsewhere there are museums to the playwright, Ibsen the artist, Munch and the explorer, Thor Heyerdahl and a fine area around the harbour that’s perfect for relaxing with a glass of Aquavit.

Further north, the fjords and glaciers are simply magnificent and, best of all, if you travel during the summer months, you can admire them all day and all night too, thanks to the Midnight Sun!
