Ironically enough for one of the EU’s newest members, Poland’s history is marked by long periods of seeing the dynamics of European life pass by. Being swallowed by the Soviet Bloc after WWII did little for Polish integration into Europe, yet it was Poland’s fiercely held identity that made her one of the catalysts of the eventual break-up of the Soviet Empire. Most people will head for Warsaw, a city decimated by war and then lovingly restored to its former glory.
