Churchill’s observation is as relevant today as it’s always been; Russia is a beautiful but baffling country. Russia started the 20th century as a feudal kingdom and began the 21st as a former communist dictatorship whose empire had encompassed one sixth of the world. President Reagan dubbed it the ‘Evil Empire’ yet it is easy to argue that Stalin’s Red Army did more to defeat the Nazis than any other single force during the Great Patriotic War.

The war did much to push Russia’s leaders into creating a buffer between themselves and Europe – Churchill famously described an iron curtain from the Baltic to the Adriatic. Thankfully today Russia and her former satellites are, once again, open for business. This is great news for the visitor as it’s fair to say; we have some catching up to do!
