Independent since 1993 Slovakia has been slower out of the blocks than its former partners in the Czech Republic, which means you’ll find a country only just opening itself up to tourism.

And what a discovery Slovakia promises to be! There are seven national parks within this small country and a diversity of scenery that is hard to imagine. The Danube plain cedes into woodland, valleys, lakes and countless thermal springs while the rugged Carpathians - famous as the backdrop to many a Dracula movie – arch around the countries northern borders from the capital, Bratislava, to the Ukraine.

Britislava itself mixes typical Hapsburg baroque with beautiful copper-domed churches and a newly pedestrianised city centre. Famous residents and visitors have included Mozart, who performed here at the tender age of 6, and Liszt who was something a late starter, giving his first performance here, aged 9. Napoleon popped in to sign a treaty with the defeated Austrians after the battle of Austerlitz, while one resident, the giant statue of former communist president, Klement Gottwald, has been removed leaving the monumental Namestie Slobody square to the world's largest post office and the enormous restaurant and beer hall, the Stara Sladovna.
