Cancun Holidays - Where Is Cancun ?
Cancun as a holiday resort was born in the 1970's, Mexico's tourism planners decided that a deserted sand spit on the Yucatan peninsula close to the small fishing village of Puerto Juarez was the ideal place to establish a world class, luxurious and exclusive hideaway.
Today Cancun is split into two distinct districts; Downtown, where most of it's 500,000 permanent residents live, and the Hotel Zone, so called as it is the area of choice for tourists, with its snazzy hotels, restaurants and clubs.

Even though Cancun has had to grow and modernise rapidly to accommodate new tourism interests, the heart and soul of traditional Mexico can still be felt all around.
Take the Popular Art Museum, for example. Here, you can bear witness to a comprehensive variety of handicrafts, customary Mexican toys and artwork, which serve as a chronicle of Cancun's changing tastes and fashions.
Not for the faint hearted or animal lovers, but a spectacle none the less, Cancun's bullfights at the Plaza de Toros hark back to the ancient days when the Mexicans were introduced to the sport by the Spanish. For those of you that would prefer a more tranquil excursion, La Torre Cancun situated in the Paseo Kukulkan district, allows an impossibly incredible view from its grand rotating tower at the El Embarcadero park and entertainment complex. Take in the beautiful beaches and shimmering sea from all around!
Come to think of it, why not get up close and personal with the sea? Aquaworld, again at Paseo Kukulkan, gives you the chance to take a Jungle Cruise on a jet-ski through Cancun's lagoon into the Caribbean Sea, where you can snorkel for 45 minutes in radiant rainbow reefs.
Other recommended jaunts are the town of Tulum, which features incredible Mayan ruins set in a jungle, and for all you golfers, two beautiful courses at the Mayan Riviera.
Cancun Holidays - Shopping
Cancun's shopping experience, like the resort itself, is a beautiful blend of the old and the new, offering authentic Mexican wares as well as a truly cosmopolitan trading feel. Do not be surprised to find Mexican T-shirt shops and markets filled with authentic Mexican handicrafts lined up next to modern Plazas and Malls selling internationally know goods.
Of course, no trip to Cancun would be complete without diving into a local market. Scurry for tequila and silver, both high exports of Mexico, and you will find that both are surprisingly cheap. Just remember there are restrictions on how much liquor can be brought back per person without paying extra duty – check before you fly.
For a more modern and familiar jaunt, try Liverpool Shopping Centre Avenida Tulum 260 (Plaza las Americas). Expect high quality service and a wide range of national and international goods, with products ranging from clothing to electronic goods, baby articles to shoes and sweets to pets all available for purchase in this thoroughly contemporary complex.
However, for a real taste of Houte Couture, the Intermall Plaza of Boulevard Kukulcán, (Km9 Hotel Zone), delivers an air of sophistication and exclusivity seemingly reserved just for you, such is the exemplary one – on – one service. A polite dozen boutiques make up the content of the Plaza, situated inside Cancún's Convention Center, showcasing the finest and freshest jewellery, men's and women's fashions, watches and gifts, all wonderful to look at, but alas, expensive with it.
Cancun Holidays - Restaurants
Continuing the proud bullfighting tradition of Cancun, the Las Gaoneras Restaurant of Costera is decorated intrinsically with memorabilia and artefacts reflecting the sport – which surrounds you as you dine on one of their delicious Spanish meat dishes.
If you are concerned about cost, the El Cabrito restaurant of Costa Azul – “The Little Goat” – serves traditional Mexican dishes that will satisfy stomachs at a low price.
However, for a slightly odd eating experience, try the Blue Bayou. Amongst this eateries specialities are crawfish flown in daily from Louisiana, cooked in a cross Cancun/Cajun style, which has produced a unique cross culture cooking venture, regularly receiving rave reviews from diners. Alongside the crayfish, look out for genuinely imported and certified Angus beef and Green Goddess rib eye steaks – now here is a restaurant that can truly say it has tried to be original with its dishes!
Cancun Holidays - Cuisine
Cancun takes particular pride from the imaginative culinary concoctions it creates from the seafood from its surrounding clear blue seas. From marlin to tuna, squid to mussels, all of which are often served with a squirt of lime juice, this is a fish eater's paradise.
Other Mexican/Cancun dishes include; Tamales - steamed cornmeal stuffed with beef, chicken and sweet pork; Nachos served with hot melted cheddar cheese and jalepeno peppers, Eggs Motulenos , a dish consisting of eggs served on top of a fried tortilla with tomato sauce, green peas, and fried banana; and of course, Tortilla chips and Tacos.
Cancun Holidays - Bars & Clubs
For a silly night out where almost anything goes, check out Senor Frogs (Km 10). Firstly, you will find yourself taken aback by the sawdust covered dance floor, not to mention the wild and fun local karaoke nights and what is commonly termed “silly nights”, where madcap competitions separate the partiers from the crowd!
More modern jaunts can be found at both the Bulldog Cafe and The City Clubs – both attract thousands of people nightly thanks to their live music, light systems and electrifying laser beam shows.

Low temperatures, if you can call them that, occur between January and February with temperatures of around 67 ° F, whilst August hits the highs with an average temperature of 91 ° F.
