Travel Alert
H1N1 Virus
The World Health Organisation (WHO) have elevated the Pandemic Alert to Level 6; this is in response to the continued spread of this 'Flu - not to the severity of the symptoms of the infection, which remain relatively minor; typically fever, cough, sore throat, headache, general body aches, chills & fatigue. Scrupulous personal hygiene is the best defence against this and any viral infection, and travellers should follow the advice recently distributed by Government to every household in the UK - frequent handwashing (or use sanitizing gel), use a tissue when coughing or sneezing & dispose of the soiled tissue promptly. There are no travel restrictions in place, and screening has not been recommended, although a few destinations are screening travellers.
Gatwick - Terminal monorail transit system
The monorail transit system between the North & South Terminals at Gatwick Airport will be out of service from 28 September 2009 thru July 2010. There will be a replacement shuttle bus service, but you should allow 20 minutes if you need to change terminals at Gatwick during this period.
Airport Security
The "one small item of hand baggage" rule has been in place for some time, and even where the airline permits any additional hand baggage, there may be charges for this. In your hand baggage, only small quantities (100ml) of "liquid" may be taken through Airport Security & into the aircraft cabin. This covers gel/paste/lotion/cream/perfume/drinks/foam etc.- and if you must take anything like this, the containers must be placed in a clear re-sealable plastic bag, 20cmx20cm (like a sandwich bag). Anything else will be confiscated. Detailed advice is available on the DfT Website - http://www.dft.gov.uk/ including specific information about the way that hand baggage should be presented for scanning. Our advice is that you continue to travel very light, as security checks are still thorough, so the less you carry, the less there is to check, and the quicker you can be processed through the airport.
