Architecture, History & Culture on a Florence Holiday

If you need to walk off a good lunch on holiday (and, chances are you will!) then Florence is as fine a place as any to wander around. You can walk from one end of the city centre to the other in about 30 minutes. And, this being Florence, you don't really need to make a point of looking out for fine architecture and historic sites. No, in Florence, such things seem to appear around every corner! When you find somewhere you like the look of the best plan is normally to find a nearby café order a coffee (they take their coffee very seriously in Florence) and drink in another splendid view.

For the more dedicated culture vultures among you, Florence is quite simply, one of the world's most important cities. In the Uffizi you can marvel at masterpieces by Giotto, Botticelli, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffaello, Tiziano and Caravaggio to name but several. Florence was home to such notables as Michaelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dante, Machiavelli and Raphael and, in one way or another, all have left an indelible impression on Florence's peerless cultural heritage.

Neither do you have to spend all your time on holiday in museums and art galleries to appreciate Florence's unique gift to the world. One of Florence's most famous landmarks, the Duomo , can be appreciated from the outside where you can admire the huge dome designed by Brunelleschi and, next door, Giotto's slender Campanile. And, if you're sure-footed, energetic, with a head for heights, you can climb to top of both of these wonderful buildings to enjoy fabulous views over the city.

Shopping Trips to Florence

Even shopping can be an uplifting cultural experience in Florence. If you're after something small and ludicrously expensive on holiday for that certain, special someone then head for the magnificent Ponte Vecchio. Built in 1345 across the River Arno this sublime structure is the place to buy exquisite jewellery. If you're on a budget don't bring a credit card and just keep looking at the bridge!

Of course you really shouldn't end a Florence holiday without saying ‘Ciao' to Michaelangelo's David. You may have to queue at the Galleria dell'Accademia , but for many this is the definitive image of Italy
