DAY 8: Walvis Bay, Namibia.

Situated off the Atlantic coast of Africa, Walvis Bay is the name of both this popular holiday town in Namibia and the bay in which it lies. The deepwater harbour is also rich in plankton and marine life and previously drew large numbers of whales, which contributed to the port's name. The Dutch - who colonized the area in the 17th century - referred to it as Walvisch Baye, the English as Whale Bay. A particular attraction of the area is the huge natural lagoon with its abundance of seabirds, including rare flamingos and pelicans, which are joined every year by 200,000 migratory birds. (B, L, D)

DAY 9 to 10: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 11: Jamestown, St Helena.

Jamestown is the capital of the island of Saint Helena, a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, at the midpoint between South America and Africa. Jamestown is a delightful port (and potential UNESCO World Heritage site) that allows visitors to experience a vibrant sea port and an unspoilt tropical island landscape with unique volcanic architecture. Explore the single-street capital or some of the island's myriad attractions. Perhaps join an optional tour to the Longwood House - where Napoleon spent his final years in exile, or for the more active, a climb up the 699 steps of 'Jacob's Ladder' - an iconic island landmark that stretches 600ft. Alternatively, shop for local handicrafts or perhaps take a tour around Plantation House, built in 1792 and home to giant tortoises living in the grounds. (B, L, D)

DAY 12 to 15: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 16: Dakar, Senegal.

Dakar is the largest city in Senegal, a vibrant country located on Africa's Atlantic coast. Famous for hosting the Dakar Rally every year, Dakar is also renowned for its exuberance, displayed in a huge array of music, arts and film festivals and fantastic African cuisine. Visitors with an interest in world history may wish to visit Goree Island, just off the Cap Vert Peninsula but still part of the city of Dakar. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Goree Island is home to the Slave Trade Museum, located in an 18th century house which is a place of pilgrimage for many. (B, L, D)

DAY 17 to 18: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 19: Arrecife, Lanzarote.

The easternmost Canary Island, Lanzarote's year-round sunshine, great scenery and friendly resorts have attracted thousands of visitors over the years, but the island has far more to offer than just sun, sea and sand. Astonishing lunar-like landscapes, lava-baked fields and desert terrain grace the interior while its heart is crowned by the mighty Fire Mountain and eerily beautiful Timanfaya National Park. The island's dramatic landscapes are edged by immense stretches of powdery red, black and white sand beaches. Enjoy the delightful harbour town of Arrecife, Lanzarote's capital, or relax at the nearby beach resort of Puerto del Carmen. (B, L, D)

DAY 20: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 21: Cadiz, Spain.

Set in southern Spain, on an unusual spit of land off the glorious coast of Andalucia and surrounded by the sparkling Atlantic, Cadiz is an intriguing ancient city with plenty to see and do. Founded by the Phoenicians over 3,000 years ago, Cadiz is believed to be one of Europe's oldest cities and was the site from which many Spanish galleons once sailed in search of the New World and its treasures. Explore the Moorish-style, walled Old Town to admire the winding, cobbled lanes and spacious plazas, the magnificent gold-domed cathedral, pretty parks, palaces and castles. Or perhaps head to the beautiful, nearby city of Seville, famed for its flamenco and tapas, Gothic Cathedral, and Alcazar royal palace. (B, L, D)

DAY 22: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 23: Palamos, Spain.

Palamos is on the Costa Brava, 160 kilometres of rugged coastline situated in northeast Spain, in the region of Catalonia. This stretch of coast has been a hugely popular tourist destination since the 1950s, due to its great beaches and beautiful, craggy scenery: indeed 'brava' means 'wild' or 'rugged' in Spanish. Once a small sleepy fishing village, Palamos itself is quaint and pretty with a great sandy beach. Spend your time strolling the promenade or take in the fishing museum, one of the most important in Europe. (B, L, D)

DAY 24: Genoa - UK.

Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK. (B)
