Britain's Maritime Heritage (from Tilbury)
Enjoy a relaxing 8 day historic voyage on Marco Polo.
Your Itinerary
DAY 1: Tilbury, UK.
Make your own way to Tilbury to embark your cruise ship, Marco Polo. Latest embarkation time is 2pm. (D)
DAY 2: Cherbourg.
The gateway to Normandy, Cherbourg sits on a spectacular natural harbour, developed into a transatlantic port by Napoleon in the early 19th century. Set on the Cotentin peninsula, alongside a stunning coastline of wide sandy beaches, tranquil fishing villages and rocky cliffs, Cherbourg is home to a quaint old town, offering a maze of narrow streets packed with traditional brasseries and splendid food and gift shops, as well as a fascinating aquarium and planetarium. An important site in the Allies' battle for the Normandy coast during WWII, Cherbourg has a turbulent history and the town's Liberation Museum is a must-see for history buffs. (B, L, D)
DAY 3 to 4: Cobh (for Cork).
Rich with a significant seafaring history, Cobh is a pleasant town that was once the embarkation point both for emigrants sailing for America and deportees bound for Australia, it also took in the rescued survivors of the Lusitania yet was the last port of call on the Titanic's doomed maiden voyage. Set on the southern shore of Great Island, one of three islands in Cork Harbour, Cobh offers great access to the wonders of County Cork. Why not head to the charming village of Blarney for a visit to its 15th century castle and a chance to kiss the famous Blarney Stone? Or perhaps visit the intriguing Jameson Irish Whiskey Heritage Centre, or Cork city, the cultural capital of the south, to admire sights such as the Cathedral, Old Courthouse, City Hall and Bells of Shandon. (B, L, D)
DAY 5: Belfast.
Set on the River Lagan, Northern Island's 'city of industry' is undergoing a renaissance that is making it a charming and intriguing place to visit. Laden with handsomely sculpted Edwardian and Victorian buildings, as diverse as the City Hall, Grand Opera House, Queen's University, Belfast Castle and Stormont, Belfast is an exciting city to explore, overlooked by the vast towers of its famed dry dock, renowned as the building site of the ill-fated Titanic. Stroll along the buzzing, restaurant-filled waterfront at leisure or join the optional city tour to admire the Botanical Gardens and other leading landmarks. Alternatively, take an optional trip to Giant's Causeway, a spectacular cluster of honeycomb-like basalt rock columns and one of Ireland's most incredible natural attractions. (B, L, D)
DAY 6: Liverpool.
Several areas of Liverpool's city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004 and include many of its most famous landmarks. (B, L, D)
