Later, journey past Jena, home of the world famous Zeiss Optics Factory, and cross the River Elbe, before reaching Germany's capital, Berlin, for two nights. (B)
DAY 3: Berlin.
Since the wall dividing the distinctly different east and west sides came down, Berlin has developed into a harmonious blend of old and new, preserving its old heritage buildings, such as the State Opera House and the Brandenburg Gate, its neoclassical style boulevards, such as the Kurfurstendamm and the Unter den Linden, as well as creating brand new buildings in the most modern architectural styles. Germany's capital is now culturally one of the most fascinating, lively and interesting cities in Europe. See the highlights on the included guided sightseeing tour. This afternoon, enjoy an optional excursion to historic Potsdam. (B)

DAY 5: Warsaw.
The included sightseeing tour with a local guide is an excellent introduction to Warsaw, lovingly restored to its former glory after the destruction suffered during World War II. Explore the city's historic landmarks, such as the wealth of fine architecture on the magnificent Royal Way and the cobbled lanes of the Old Town Square. (B)
DAY 6: Warsaw - Jasna Gora - Auschwitz - Krakow.
Your first stop today is at Jasna Gora Monastery near Czestochowa, which withstood the repeated onslaught of overwhelming Swedish forces during the religious wars of the 17th-century. Since then its Black Madonna has been venerated as the 'Queen of Poland' and is considered the country's national symbol. This afternoon, visit the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp, a chilling reminder of the Holocaust and the outrages perpetrated against the Jews during World War II. Later, continue to Krakow, Poland's cultural capital, for two nights. (B, D)
DAY 7: Krakow.
Thought to be Poland's most beautiful city, Krakow was the country's capital for almost 500 years and for centuries was the residence of Polish Kings. Today it is without a doubt its cultural capital. An optional morning sightseeing tour takes in well-preserved Rynek Glowny medieval market square, the Jewish Quarter, St Mary's Church and Wawel Cathedral. Later, enjoy free time to explore before tonight's optional folklore dinner. (B)
DAY 8: Krakow - Tatra Mountains - Budapest.
Today's enjoyable drive crosses three countries, starting first with the Tatra Mountains of Poland, before driving through scenic Slovakia to Hungary and your destination, Budapest, the most charismatic of Eastern European capitals, where you will stay for two nights. (B, D)
DAY 9: Budapest.
The included sightseeing tour with a local guide features Buda Castle which dominates the twin cities of Buda and Pest, separated by the broad ribbon of the Danube. See the expansive plaza of Heroes' Square, the old inns and wine cellars along the Buda riverbank, the impressive Royal Castle, Parliament, Fisherman's Bastion, Matthias Church and Margaret Island. Later enjoy an optional Hungarian night. (B)
DAY 10: Budapest - Vienna.
Journey to the Austrian border by way of Györ and continue to Vienna, arriving in time to enjoy your first afternoon and evening in this lively capital. Enjoy an included sightseeing tour with a local guide, taking in sights such as the State Opera, Hofburg, Town Hall and Parliament. (B)

DAY 12: Prague.
The Czech capital is a beautiful treasure trove of Gothic and Baroque architecture, which inspired the works of Dvorak and Smetana, two of the city's best-known composers. Today's included sightseeing tour with a local guide visits landmarks such as the National Theatre, Charles Bridge and the old Town Hall's famous Astronomical Clock. (B)
DAY 13: Prague - Munich.
Back across the Czech border and into the Bohemian Forest before reaching the German border. Next drive south to Munich for one night. (B)
DAY 14: Munich - Romantic Road - Frankfurt area.
The highlight today is undoubtedly the Romantic Road, which runs north to south as far as the Alps. First to lovely medieval Nördlingen. See Rothenburg with its ramparts and towers, cobbled streets and 16th-century houses before heading towards Friedrichsdorf, in the Frankfurt area, for one night. (B, D)
