Taste of Madeira - West Island tour

This tour gives you the opportunity to view some of the spectacular scenery for which Madeira is renowned. Passing by the picturesque village of Câmara de Lobos, once painted by Sir Winston Churchill during his stay in Madeira, we continue past the vineyards to Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe. The tour then continues to São Vicente via Encumeada, where the north coast offers breathtaking views of the sea against the scarped landscape. After a three-course meal in Porto Moniz, the road forks inland to climb up to Paul da Serra, a magnificent plateau about 1600m above sea level. Then down to Ponta do Sol and along the south coast to Ribeira Brava, a pleasant seaside village, before returning to Funchal. Full Day.

Palheiro Gardens and Levada Walk

Madeira is famed for its beautiful flowers and this tour will give you a glimpse of some of the vegetation of Madeira. The gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, currently owned by the Blandy family, were originally laid out in the 18th century. Some of the original themed gardens have survived to the present day, plus new plants have been introduced, making the gardens even more fascinating. On leaving the gardens, we set off to join one of Madeira's levadas. These are man-made irrigations channels (similar to miniature canals) which feed the water from the mountains to the plantations and houses below. Enjoy a pleasant walk, with lovely views and fresh, clean mountain air. Comfortable clothing and adequate footwear is advisable for the 1 hour walk. Half Day.

Then to Ribeiro Frio, where you can visit the trout hatchery and enjoy a short leisurely walk to Balcões. Descend through Faial to the village of Santana, famous for the traditional houses with thatched roofs and densely planted vineyards. Here you are offered the opportunity to visit the vineyards of "Quinta do Furão", where a three course lunch will be served. The afternoon takes you past Porto da Cruz and up to Portela for wonderful views of the island, then off to visit the village of Machico, the original capital of the island, hidden in the bay and stretching out over the hillsides, before your return to Funchal. Full Day.

For those who would like to experience one of the ancient means of transport in Madeira, you can try the famous toboggan ride. The tour then continues to Eira do Serrado from where you have incredible views over Curral das Freiras - "Nun's Valley", a small village situated deep in a extinct crater not far from the highest peak of Madeira.
