Your Itinerary

DAY 1: Depart UK.

DAY 2: Arrive Kuala Lumpur.

On arrival in Kuala Lumpur, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure. Kuala Lumpur – more commonly known as KL – was founded in the mid-1800’s as a small tin mining town; the city was declared Malaysia’s capital in 1957. One of Asia’s economic giants, KL boasts gleaming skyscrapers, boisterous markets, ancient monuments and colonial architecture in a typically Asian mix of old and new. (D)

DAY 3: Kuala Lumpur.

After breakfast, drive to the outskirts of KL passing Ambassador Row, Istana Sharif Ali and Malay Villages on the way to the limestone hills of the Batu Caves. Comprising three caverns and several smaller caves, Batu is the shrine of Lord Murugah, a Hindu deity. 272 steps lead up to this staggering natural temple, decorated with ornate and intricate images of deities and murals depicting scenes from Hindu scriptures. Next visit Menara Kuala Lumpur (or KL Tower) for spine-tingling bird’s eye views of KL from 276 metres above ground level. This evening visit Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, featuring a 75ft gopuram in the South Indian style. Continue to the open air bazaar of Chinatown where you can stroll through the night market and haggle for bargain souvenirs, before enjoying dinner and a cultural show at a Malay restaurant. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: Kuala Lumpur – Malacca – Kuala Lumpur.

Depart Kuala Lumpur this morning, for a historical walking tour of Malacca, a World Heritage site. Begin at the bridge over Malacca River where it is possible to see old Indonesian sailing perahus and wooden barges, before exploring the town square with its terracotta red Dutch colonial buildings. Also walk past Christ Church, the oldest protestant church in Malaysia, the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower, and the impressive ‘Stadthuys’, once the home of the Dutch Governor and now the Musium Sejarah or Historical Museum. Continue past Porta de Santiago, around the original boundaries of the Old Fort (destroyed in 1806) to the ruin of St. Paul’s Church then past the Malaccan Sultanate’s Palace, or Istana. After lunch, wander down Jonkers Street and see nearby Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the only temple where you can find three major doctrinal systems of Chinese belief: Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Drive back to Kuala Lumpur where the evening is free. (B, L)

DAY 5: Kuala Lumpur – Kuala Tembeling – Taman Negara.

After breakfast drive to Kuala Tembeling Jetty to board your boat to the jungle paradise of Taman Negara, arriving late afternoon. Get a glimpse into hidden Malaysia as your boat speeds past lush rainforest and villages on the river banks, and look out for monkeys and birds. After dinner, there is a unique opportunity to see the forest come alive at night with on a jungle walk and watch animals up close from an observation hide. (B, D)

DAY 6: Taman Negara.

Spend this morning exploring the jungle on the canopy walkway, a short walk from the hotel. This canopy walkway is the longest suspension walkway at 530 metres, and gives a thrilling view of the rainforest from 40 metres above ground. Keep your eyes peeled for a plethora of birds, reptiles, amphibians, monkeys and even the occasional elephant. After lunch visit the Orang Asli ('Original People') settlement to learn about the nomadic lifestyle of the local 'Batek' tribes, and see how a blow pipe is used. (B, L, D)

DAY 7: Taman Negara - Cameron Highlands.

This morning depart Taman Negara by boat then drive along winding roads, passing verdant jungle and stopping at the town of Ringlet for afternoon tea, before arriving at the Cameron Highlands in the afternoon. 5000 feet above sea level and benefitting from a cooler climate, the area was discovered by British surveyor William Cameron in 1885 and subsequently developed as a hill station by Sir George Maxwell in 1925. (B)

DAY 8: Cameron Highlands.

Begin your day with a short stop at the Sungei Palas Boh Tea Plantation where you will learn about the production process as well as variations between the different types of processed tea. Afterwards, drive up to the peak of Mount Brinchang, the highest mountain in the Cameron Highlands, for breathtaking views of the surrounding rainforest and mountain range. Next explore the mysterious Mossy Forest along a board walk which winds through twisted, moss-covered and mist-wreathed trees - the perfect environment for a plethora of ferns, moss, lichens and orchids. The twisting, soft green branches and dense undergrowth are also home to a variety of bird and wildlife. After a short stop for lunch, afternoon sightseeing includes a butterfly & insect farm, the Time Tunnel Historical Museum and the Sam Poh Buddhist Temple, overlooking Brinchang Town. (B, L)

DAY 9: Cameron Highlands - Penang.

Depart the foothills of the Cameron Highlands this morning and head for the island of Penang. Despite becoming increasingly industrialised, Penang has retained many of its beautiful pre-war colonial buildings in Georgetown including Fort Cornwallis, the first stop on today's sightseeing tour. Built in 1808, the Fort marks the spot where Sir Francis Light first landed on the island. Next, drive along the Street of Harmony which houses the Anglican St. George's Church, the Kuan Yin Chinese Temple, the Mahamariaman Indian Temple and the Kapital Keling Mosque. Admire the intricate woodwork and porcelain décor of Khoo Kongsi before passing by colourful Little India and bustling Chinatown. Last stop is the world's fourth largest reclining Buddha statue at Wat Chayamangkalaram. (B, L)

DAY 10: Penang.

Enjoy a day at leisure in Penang. Why not indulge in the city’s culinary scene, sampling some classic dishes such as Char Kuey Teow and Penang Laksa? Alternatively climb to the top of the elaborate Temple of Supreme Bliss on the hills of Ayer Hitam or spend the day on Batu Feringghi Beach, watching the sun set over the hills in the evening.

DAY 11: Penang – UK.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.
