New Orleans, the Old South and Florida

Jean McCarthy 24/06/2015

Had a marvellous time on the New Orleans, the Old South and Florida.  Everything about it perfect.  From New Orleans and all the places we visited – highlights being Graceland, Memphis, Natchez, recording studios where I was allowed to play on the piano where Elvis had recorded over 274 songs. All the great music stars had recorded there.  A wonderful experience.  We finished the tour in Orlando.  We had a ten day stay in a villa in Orlando so we went back to the airport on the hotel courtesy bus and picked up our hire car and then had ten blissful days in a villa relaxing.

We knew there would be long days and early starts.   Suitcases mostly have to be inside your room ready for the hotel bellboy to collect and take down to the coach.  This went without a hitch each time.  You can leave your cases and go down to breakfast and then be on the coach ready to leave at 8.00. Two or three hotels include breakfast (not provided by Archers but complimentary from the various hotels). Coffee makers in every room we stayed at.  Only one fridge that I can remember.  If you need a fridge for medical reasons i.e., insulin I think you would have to make sure you have pre-arranged this with Archers.    There were short stops on the way to other destinations and the longest journey was when we drove to Memphis.  I heard a few other people saying that they didn’t feel the coach quality was very good but our tour was very good value for money.  If you want better quality than I believe you would need to book the Globus Tours and pay the Globus prices.  There was a toilet on board and a foot rest but not a lot of space for tall men.  The air conditioning on the coach was excellent.  The coach does get cold so take a cardigan.  The rep kept saying this many times reminding you that the coach gets cold. So no excuse if you are cold on the bus as we were warned.  We would have all complained had it the air con not been working !!

The rep, Karen was beyond excellent.  Nothing was too much trouble and she even played our song choices from her lap top !! Doing her own d-jay sounds some days.  Archers should be very proud of Karen as things ran like clockwork and she was nice, gentle and kind but was greatly appreciated by the whole coach.  Everyone on the coach was very friendly with mostly British but a good bunch of Australians, a couple from Japan, two ladies from Sri Lanka and possibly another couple of countries.  It was a full coach bar two seats so around 51 on the coach. She was there on all the included excursions and joined in and had as much fun as everyone else.  Amazing really considering she must have done these trips countless times.

The optional excursions were also very, very good.  I think we spent about £450.00 (for two of us) on extra tours. We believe in doing everything that is available.  That is why we are on the tour. However, not everyone can stretch to this.  There were the odd ones who always complained about the cost of the extra tours but for us we were quite happy booking and there was never any pressure at all from the rep to book things but she was always there should people want to book anything extra. We had a marvellous night at a private plantation home where the owner came round chatting to us and giving us a personal welcome and farewell on departure and a guided tour plus the history and chatted personally about the antiques in the home. Had a great meal on Beale Street with a Jazz player and singer.  Had optional extra lunches and other tours.  There was an included tour to the Grand Ole Oprey.  To be honest we were not that keen.  The music was very loud, we didn’t know the songs but evidently one of the acts “Roscoe Flatts” is the local heart throb – must be their version of One Direction maybe !!  We really enjoyed the optional Savannah Theatre Show which was our kind of music in that they sang, danced right from the 40’s up to the 80’s.  A great show.  There was also another meal and show in Natchez which again was very enjoyable.  You have to eat each night so you may as well include a show too.

There was also an included taxi that picked us up from home and took us to Heathrow and was waiting for us on return.  Very good service with nice clean cars.

I will be traveling with Archers again as the tour I did was wonderful.  I had booked this due to a family member having been on Archers tours many time.  She has covered all of America over the years and had done this tour too.

A little tip is this which I would definitely do on any new tour I book with Archers.  Arrive at the first hotel at least one or maybe two days before your tour starts.  You will then be fresh and raring to go.  Archers will arrange for an earlier flight and a later flight going home should you want to do this although they may make a small admin charge.  The airlines was US Airways – use another one if possible.  Dreadful airline.  Ignorant unkempt cabin crew to some of the passengers and what I consider attitude based on the passengers nationality.  Disgraceful.

But please book Archers tours they are excellent.  I hope all their other tours match up to this one I did.

New Orleans

Ron Puckering 08/04/2013

My wife, Hazel and I have had some truly great holidays with Archers Holidays, but our musical tour earlier this year to Memphis was fantastic!

Nashville, St. Louis and New Orleans rates with the best.

Whether you were a music fanatic, or just liked good music, this tour had something for everyone.

Thanks again, Archers Holidays.

Thank you for your request.
