Your Itinerary
DAY 1: UK – Montréal.
Fly to Montréal where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for the next two nights.
DAY 2: Montréal.
The entire day is yours to explore Montréal. You may wish to begin your winter adventure with an optional guided sightseeing tour of multicultural Montréal. As you journey through the streets, learn about the history of the city named one of UNESCO's 'Cities of Design'. Stop for photos in Old Montréal, the Notre Dame Basilica, Olympic Park and St. Joseph's Oratory. Afterwards you may wish to experience the city's colourful Chinatown before strolling down Rue de la Gauchetiere and on to Mont Royal Park, which comes alive at winter with tobogganers and ice-skaters. Take a horse-drawn sleigh ride or try snowshoeing through sparkling forest trails, lit by the glow of the city lights.
DAY 3: Montréal – Québec City.
This morning board VIA Rail®’s Montréal - Québec City train, bound for Québec City. A late morning arrival leaves the rest of the day free to explore the historic streets of this fabulous city which is a feast for the eyes during carnival. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Québec City’s old town is one of the few walled cities in North America and was the centre of New France, reflected in its French colonial architecture. The Plains of Abraham – the main venue for the Winter Carnival – was the site of a decisive battle between Britain and France in 1759.
DAY 4 to 5: Québec City.
The annual Québec Winter Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world and third on the list of top carnivals after the famous carnivals in Rio and New Orleans. Born through the Québecer’s traditional January celebrations, Carnaval de Québec has been celebrated since 1894. Over the next two days, your Winter Experience Passport allows you access to the many carnival activities. Make your way to the Plains of Abraham and try out the snow and ice slides, take a ride on a dog sled or a sleigh, have a go at snow rafting, try traditional Canadian fare at the outdoor BBQ, the Sugar Shack or Bistro and if you’re feeling daring, even try the zip line! Possibly the most renowned attraction at the carnival are the snow sculptures. From the start of the carnival, the sculptors create fantastic works of art from compacted blocks of snow, which are then showcased along the promenade into the fairgrounds. Don’t miss the magical ice palace, just a few steps from the carnival grounds it becomes and entertainment venue at night, and the design is different every year. If you’ve chosen to travel on the first departure, don’t miss the dog sled race through the streets of Old Québec, which are covered in snow and transformed into a Nordic trail for this event. Those travelling on the last departure will be in Québec City during the famous snow bath and the closing ceremonies of the carnival. This is a golden opportunity to experience the magic of the Winter Carnival atmosphere at its best.
