South African Explorer

Sheila Barclay 17/10/2012

In September, my friend and I took your trip, South African Explorer with an add on to Victoria Falls. What a wonderful experience it was to stay at the Zambezi Sun Hotel. Zebra, giraffe and impala roamed the hotel grounds at will, doing their own thing and paying no heed to the visitors who were snapping away often at arm’s length from them. The cheeky monkeys stole bags of sugar from the dining room tables and ate them on our balcony, licking up what they had spilt, faces covered in sugar!

The falls were low in water at this time of year, but the pathways were dry and the views were not spoilt by spray. It was a good time of year for animal spotting too, as the new leaves had not yet sprouted and it gave us clearer views through the bushes. In Kruger National Park, we saw four of the big five by lunchtime.

The leopard eluded us, but we saw its kill hanging from a tree. About eight young male lions had brought down a Cape buffalo on the road, where the prey cannot keep their feet and the predators have easy pickings. The lions were feasting on the carcass just feet from our vehicle. What a sight!

Shakaland, in Zulu country was for me the best part of the holiday. I loved the whole cultural experience of living in the Kraal they built for the Shaka Zulu mini series. The very comfortable en suite hut, the singing and dancing, the handicrafts and the enactments of the Zulu way of life were magical. Lovely people with a proud history, so welcoming and happy. The handicraft sellers did not pressure you at all anywhere in South Africa. It was a pleasant change from other countries I have visited. I also bought a lot of jewellery from them, as I was able to browse without harassment.

The Garden Route was beautiful, each day was different as always on Archers tours, a city tour would be followed by a more leisurely day and relaxing in the countryside.

Again, we met some lovely people and were sorry to leave them at Cape Town as they were staying on. Then again, I had to get home to regroup for my next holiday on Sunday.

I would like to say what an exceptional guide Rudi Van der Lay was. He went out of his way to arrange things for us and could not have been more pleasant. At one point I mentioned that I would have liked to visit Hermanus to view the whales from the cliff and I was disappointed that it was not included. All of the other ten tourists agreed with me and he was immediately in touch with his base in Cape Town and got permission from them to change the itinerary to take us to the coast after the ostrich farm. Well, what a stroke of genius that was. The southern righ whales were breeching, spy holing and nose diving in the bay and all clearly visible with the naked eye. Those with binoculars had great views, but even those of us with modest cameras took fantastic photos.

Another great holiday. Thank you once again.
