The Gamla Stan Old Town is home to many sightseeing attractions, including the magnificent 18th-century Royal Palace, the majestic Cathedral of St Nicholas and the Stock Exchange. The city is also Sweden's main educational and cultural centre and has a university that dates back to 1877, as well as a fine opera house, theatre and concert hall. (B)

DAY 6 to 7: St Petersburg.

Located on the Gulf of Finland, Russia's second largest city is one of Europe's finest gems. Enjoy plenty of free time to explore this exquisite place, which was established by Peter the Great in 1703 and extends across the islands of the Neva River delta. Admire its arched bridges and canals, see the imposing Peter and Paul Fortress and marvel at treasures such as the spectacular Hermitage, stuffed with over 2 million artworks, and St Isaac's Cathedral, crowned by a gold-covered dome. (B, L, D)

DAY 8: Helsinki.

Often called the 'White City of the North' because of its many buildings constructed using a local light-coloured granite, Finland's capital city retains a small-town feel, with no high-rise buildings and many charming parks and waterways. (B, L, D)

DAY 9: Hanko.

The annual Hanko Regatta is a popular attraction in this southernmost tip of Finland. A Finnish frontier port that was the site of an important naval battle between Sweden and Russia in 1714, Hanko became part of the Russian Grand Duchy of Finland, and was a favoured retreat for vacationing Tsarist royalty. During WWII, Hanko was a Soviet military base and was heavily bombed. The Hanko archipelago offers numerous inviting anchorages for sailors. (B, L, D)

DAY 10: Mariehamn.

Jutting into the Gulf of Bothnia toward Sweden is Åland, an autonomous island territory under Finnish rule but not part of the E.U. - which is why the ferries can sell duty-free goods! Though Mariehamn was named after the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna in 1861, Mariehamn is Swedish by language and heritage. In the harbour, you will see one of the great Flying P Line tallships, a Clyde-built 4-mast barquentine named Pommern, now a museum. The magnificent Flying P ships were the inspiration for Star Clippers! (B, L, D)
