DAY 2: Barcelona.

Today, you will be transferred to your cruise ship, Carnival Breeze, for embarkation. (B, D)

DAY 3: Marseille.

The southern French city of Marseille has been a major Mediterranean harbour for more than 2,500 years. Leading off the harbour is the city's most famous street, La Canebiere, a broad bustling boulevard, shaded by rows of plane trees. Arriving at breakfast time, the rest of the day is yours to explore this historic port. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: Livorno (for Pisa and Florence).

A Renaissance gem and city of the Medicis, Florence is an enthralling place. Traffic is partly banned in the historic centre so visitors can wander at leisure and admire its timeless beauty. Enjoy an optional sightseeing walk with a local guide or excursion to Pisa, to admire the legendary Leaning Tower and the Square of Miracles. (B, L, D)

DAY 5: Civitavecchia (for Rome).

Today, don't miss an optional excursion to witness the glory that is Rome. Italy's capital overflows with Roman, Renaissance and Baroque treasures, making it a sightseer's dream. Witness the vast and glorious St Peter's Square, the majestic St Peter's Basilica and splendid Clemente's Basilica before enjoying a guided tour of the mighty Colosseum, where gladiators once fought for their lives, cheered on by 50,000 baying spectators. (B, L, D)

DAY 6: Naples.

A captivating combination of vibrant street life and historical grandeur, Naples is an exhilarating city set in a breathtaking position between mighty Mount Vesuvius and the shimmering Bay of Naples. Explore the wealth of cultural treasures and atmospheric sights at leisure or perhaps join an optional trip to visit the chic shops and glamorous piazzettas of beautiful Capri island, the remarkable remains of Pompeii - the ash-covered remnants of a city populated by 25,000 people before Vesuvius exploded into life in 79AD, or the soaring slopes and crater of Mount Vesuvius National Park itself. (B, L, D)

DAY 7: At sea.

(B, L, D)

DAY 8: Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik is a beautiful city overlooking the sparkling Adriatic Sea and stunning Dalmatian Coast. This afternoon, explore the city at leisure, perhaps strolling along the ramparts and admiring the views. (B, L, D)

DAY 9 to 10: Venice.

Enjoy plenty of time to explore Venice. Maybe take a leisurely walk from St Mark's Square to the Rialto Bridge or a pleasant stop in one of the open-air cafés on a quiet 'Campo' just to sip a cool drink and do some people watching. Whatever your choice, enjoy all the mystique of this, Italy's most enchanting city. (B, L, D)

DAY 11: At sea.

A picturesque harbour town in northeast Sicily, Messina overlooks the Straits of Messina and was once a departure point for the knights of the Crusades. Today, join an optional excursion to Taormina, a colourful clifftop resort famed for its colossal Greco-Roman theatre, which affords awe-inspiring views over Mount Etna, Europe's biggest active volcano. From there, continue to the 15th century Corvaia Palace, once home to Sicily's parliament. Alternatively, enjoy an optional excursion up the slopes of Etna to wonder at its extraordinary, lava-coated Silvestri Crater. (B, L, D)
