Holidays in Ischia - Italy
The curative powers of the island of Ischia’s
thermal springs have been extolled for more than
two millennia. And in addition to some of Italy’s
loveliest volcanic scenery, the island’s many
health spas remain a major draw for visitors from
all round the world.
Since the ancient Greek historian and geographer
Strabone called them ‘gold mines’ in
the first century BC, Ischia’s thermal springs
have been one of the island’s most valuable
assets, attracting many visitors each year, keen
to take advantage of the fabled healing properties
of the mineral-rich waters and mud baths.

Ischia & the Bay of Naples
As soon as you arrive in Ischia you will be in no
doubt as to why the ancient Greeks and Romans considered
this to be a supernatural paradise with miraculous
health-giving magic. The island’s spectacular
setting in the azure blue Bay of Naples; the dramatic
volcanic landscapes. The temperate climate; the unspoilt
beaches, rolling vineyards and fragrant pine groves,
caressed by gentle sea breezes; everything about
this exquisite corner of the world firmly promotes
relaxation and revitalisation.
Divided into six ‘communes’ and home
to around 50,000 people, Ischia is the largest island
in the Gulf of Naples. The main town is called Ischia,
and is divided into the traditional fishing village
of Ischia Ponte and the spa resort of Ischia Porto,
built around a pine forest on the edge of a submerged
crater.
Spa Resorts in Ischia
Of course, no holiday to Ischia would be complete
without actually paying a visit to one of the island’s
spa resorts. Many of the hotels have their own ‘in-house’ facilities,
or you can drop in to any of the many other complexes
scattered around the island.
In most establishments you can pay a daily membership
fee, then take your pick from the various treatments
on offer. Wallow in mud for a while. Get wrapped
up in seaweed. Enjoy a relaxing massage. Or bubble
away your aches and pains in a spa bath or jacuzzi.
Whether you’re looking for a specific cure
or just feel like some pampering, you’ll find
the perfect solution.
Head north east along the coast from Ischia town
and you come to Casamicciola, the island’s
oldest thermal resort. The numerous hot springs here
have intriguing names like ‘tamburo’ (drum), ‘Oro’ (gold)
and ‘Argento’ (silver). However, the
most important are the Santa Rita and Gurgitello
springs, which can reach temperatures of up to 60
degrees, while the resort is also famous as the site
of the hidden Cava Bianca del Monaco, source of the
therapeutic mud which is used throughout the island.
Whether you holiday in Ischia for the thermal waters,
the awe-inspiring scenery or simply for a generous
helping of relaxation, you’re sure to be captivated
by this lovely island.
