Malta MapMalta – A Little Jewel In The Middle Of The Med'

Strategically situated in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta's past is a swashbuckling one! Almost all the great historic seafarers have sought Malta's fabulous natural harbours from the Pheonicians and the Carthagenians to the Romans and the Saracens, the Normans, the Aragonese, Napoleon and Nelson. In the last century Malta was a vital refuge and staging post for the Allied convoys of WWII and Churchill even went as far as awarding the island the George Cross.

It was those great merchant's and sailors the Pheonicians who gave the island the name Maleth ( a haven), which was later corrupted by the Greeks into Melita (honey), from which the modern name of Malta derives.

A popular resort with all the amenities you will need for a great holiday, Qawra boasts a pleasant seafront promenade to wander along and an array of restaurants and bars. Buses are readily available if you want to explore the island though you could always hire a car as traffic is light and the Maltese even drive on the ‘right' or should that be the correct side of the road. - i.e. the left!

Transfer time from Luqa to Qawra: 45 mins approximately.

Sliema is a popular, rather upmarket resort on the Eastern side of the island blessed with some 5km of waterfront that's just perfect for whiling away sunny afternoons. There are some fine shops, excellent cafes and restaurants – you'll eat well in Malta especially if you stick to locally caught fish – and, beyond the shops, there are rocky platforms where people sunbathe and swim in the clear blue waters or enjoy the view across the bay to Valletta.

When visiting the capital why not take a walk to the Upper Barracca Gardens for panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, or visit St John's cathedral and the museum, and the Grand Master's Palace, a beautiful building which now houses the Parliament of the Republic of Malta and the offices of the President.

Transfer time from Luqa to Sliema: 30 mins approximately.
