Holidays in New Orleans - Louisiana, USA
New Orleans is the city of mystery, an indefinable
gem. She is more than jazz and Mardi Gras. Her charm
travels far beyond the boundaries of the French Quarter
and her history is not limited to cemeteries and
books. She is a rich gumbo of streetcars and paddle
steamers, iron balconies and majestic courtyards,
antique shops and art galleries. Follow the divine
scent of world-famous cuisine from Creole to Cajun,
crawfish to oysters and Bananas Foster to bread pudding.

New Orleans - Birthplace of Jazz
It’s no wonder visitors from around the world keep coming back to Louisiana -- the Birthplace of Jazz -- to experience our wonderful musical tradition. Not only was jazz born here, but our state is home to other musical styles, including Cajun, Zydeco, rockabilly and gospel. Music is our heartbeat. And it can be heard in parks, on the streets and at celebrated venues throughout Louisiana. When it comes to music, we’re in a class of our own.
Those who enjoy the great outdoors, and who are thirsting for an eco-adventure will find something special within easy reach of New Orleans. One must do is a swamp bayou tour, where you can observe herons, egrets and turtles in their natural environment and almost certainly spot an alligator or two.
Plantations of Sugar Cane & Cotton in America
Visitors can step back in time more than 150 years to recall the grand days before the American Civil War. In the 1850’s more than three-quarters of America’s millionaires lived in the region between Natchez, Mississippi, and New Orleans, their wealth based on vast plantations of sugar cane and cotton. And while these families may have gone, their homes have remained and are on display to offer a rare opportunity to experience the grand lifestyle of America’s antebellum past.
Louisiana offers international visitors tax free shopping, which is refunded at the airport or can be claimed back on return to the UK. With tax refunds and the excellent exchange rate there has never been a better time to shop til’ you drop in New Orleans.
With more than 400 annual fairs and festivals, our cultural calendar is packed with exciting celebrations that showcase our cuisine, music and cultural heritage and provide great added value.
Mardi Gras, Louis Armstong & Satchmo Summerfest
Annually Mardi Gras is the highlight of the State’s calendar and it culminates in massive celebrations over the weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday. This season of indulgence brims with parades and masquerade balls. Colourful Mardi Gras floats snake their way through the streets of New Orleans and the krewes throw beaded necklaces in green, purple and gold to the on-looking crowds.
However Louisiana’s love of parties does not end with Mardi Gras, this is emphasized by the 24 hour licensing laws in New Orleans making it one of only two US cities with such a party atmosphere. Local stars and world-renowned talents take over Louis Armstrong Park and the New Orleans Fairground for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. French Quarter Fest in New Orleans historic district features the world’s largest jazz brunch and spectacular fireworks. In August, Satchmo Summerfest celebrates all that is wonderful about one of New Orleans most famous sons, Louis Armstong.
