DAY 1: UK - Azores.
Fly to Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, where you will be met by our representative and transferred to Vila Franca do Campo for three nights. On the southern part of São Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo has a beautiful marina and was the first capital of the island. (D)
DAY 2: Whale and dolphin spotting cruise.
This morning, enjoy a holiday highlight as you head out in a Zodiac style boat for an unforgettable quest to spot some of the 25 species of majestic whales and playful dolphins that swim in these waters. The icy cold Atlantic seas around the Azores are considered one of Europe's prime spots for whale and dolphin watching. Cruise along the south coast of São Miguel, guided by lookouts stationed on the island, and enjoy the commentary from the on-board biologist. The afternoon is at leisure in Vila Franca do Campo.
Note: In cases such as adverse weather conditions the day of this excursion is subject to change. This excursion will operate in the afternoon for departures in June and August with the morning at leisure. (B, D)
DAY 3: Nordeste.
Tour the Azores' lush green vegetation and sparkling blue sea belvederes, stopping first at Povoação where the first island settlers arrived in the 15th century, before heading to Ribeira dos Caldeirões with its rustic water-mills, waterfalls and a small lake. Continue to the peaceful Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada belvederes before reaching the alluring, mountain-fringed town of Nordeste, the highest point on Sao Miguel Island, blanketed by deep forests. After lunch at a local restaurant, head to Salga and then Gorreana for a fascinating tour of the tea factory and plantations. (B, D)
DAY 4: Furnas Valley - Lagoa do Fogo - Ponta Delgada.
Today, head to Ponta Delgada, the Azorean capital, driving through the lush, flower-filled Furnas Valley on the way. This tranquil area is one of the richest hydrological areas in Europe, boasting 22 hot springs. Visit the Botanical Park of Terra Nostra, an exquisite garden of lakes, bridges and luxuriant flora, before heading to Lake Furnas, set in the crater of an extinct volcano, for an authentic local lunch of 'Cozido das Furnas' - a hearty meal cooked underground by the heat of the volcano. After lunch, continue to Ribeira Grande on the north coast for a fascinating glimpse into the production of the famous Azores liqueur at Eduardo Ferreira's factory. Next, head to the pearlescent waters of Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake) to enjoy magnificent views over its waters from the lookout point. Continue to Ponta Delgada for four nights. (B, L)
DAY 5: Ponta Delgada.
Enjoy a full day in Ponta Delgada with a morning's sightseeing tour to introduce you to this beautiful town. The heart of the Azores, Ponta Delgada is home to the islands' political, cultural and religious centres, all housed in magnificent Portuguese buildings. Your tour takes in highlights such as the ornate 16th century Church of São Sebastião and the colourful flower, food and craft market. (B)
DAY 6: Ponta Delgada. At leisure.
A day at leisure to further enjoy Ponta Delgada's relaxed atmosphere and charming cobbled streets. Alternatively join one of the optional jeep safaris to see the area from a different perspective. (B)
DAY 7: Sete Cidades.
Journey to Sete Cidades, a rural village set in a spectacular volcanic crater alongside two beautiful lakes, said to have been formed by the tears of two separating lovers. En-route, after admiring the awesome panorama from the Vista do Rei belvedere, stop on the lake banks to admire the impressive views. Later, cross the island's central mountain range, passing the old village of Bretanha, before visiting a local pineapple plantation to sample the potent pineapple liqueur it produces. (B, L)
DAY 8: Ponta Delgada - UK.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK. (B)
