542Roy StallardUK I have recently thoroughly enjoyed a third cruise and stay in Egypt - booking through Archers Direct - my trip this time was on MS Magic 1.

This is a first class holiday and I would so recommend the trip to anyone who is considering a cruise and stay idea. I am not sure that it would appeal to those who have experienced a cruise type trip - like merely remaining on a large boat for the duration and so forth, merely sallying forth and if lucky, get beyond the docks for a minimal experience of what the various locations have to offer.

Firstly the boat - cabins are well appointed and spacious, bearing in mind the overall size of the craft, however, if you are a single traveller like me, be aware that you may be given a cabin on deck 2 - since this is also where a very noisy generator come pump leaps into action, just as you are looking towards a good night of rest, an essential, since you will have a week of very early rising ahead of you. In addition, there are staff entrances and accommodation at the end of the corridor and that means additional disruption. Families and couples are allocated cabins automatically on the third and fourth floor level - and that is where all of you should aim to be.

I enjoyed the ambience on board and it was great to meet up with other people with similar interests, the guides are excellent on these trips, we had a lovely lady called Shareen and the rep Martin was excellent, I like to look at other reviews, and from various tours, the guides and reps are always highly praised and I have come across many of them myself - devotee since 1992.

I have noticed several comments re the food on offer and choice, I have always enjoyed the variety offered, the fresh breads, soups, veg, fruit, salads, pastas and meats are of a high quality - maybe since these hols are such good value, and therefore well subscribed to, some people are disappointed that burgers, pizzas, chips, ketchups and so forth are not generally available.

One point of warning though - in order to get onto your chosen boat you will have to walk down several sets of steps from the Corniche, a promenade along the Nile - most of these steps as you get lower are in a very poor state of repair, broken and uneven, watch your footing, and especially as you board the gang plank onto the boat/s - these are narrow and unwieldy, with a thin piece of rope either side to hang on to and sustain balance. Having done that, if your boat is not the first docked you will walk through maybe several others - there are always staff at these entrances to assist and the majority of them are a similar height, so there won't be absailing (much).

Following this week I went to Cairo - did what I wanted to do, filled in the dynasty gaps at the museum on Boxing Day, went up onto the side of the Pyramids that most tourists don't do, don't know about and if they had been got up at 4am on Christmas Day, wouldn't have cared less about - point of warning here travellers, try and find out if, you do the Cairo leg, if you will have a room ready at one of the two hotels used. Once again, the rep was excellent, did his best, but the Cairoeans do not seem to have the same sense of caring, it was 9 hours before I had a room, and I wasn't alone. I will never go back to Cairo, the pollution is dreadful, smelly and growing, in fact the sky backdrop from the pyramids is a dirty grey yellow.

Such a joy to be back at Luxor for New Year and Sonesta St George, a huge greeting at Luxor airport from the rep arranging the internal stuff, actually remembered me from 3 years ago. Can recommend St George - so easy to get around Luxor from here, superb hotel and staff.

If you read this, I hope that your experience is as good as mine always is in this fantastic country.

542Lynda & Roddy WallaceUK We have just come back from the Wonders of the Nile Cruise on the MS Magic 1 cruise ship.

I'm just writing to say that this was one of the best holidays we have ever had. Everything from the initial enquiry, to booking, the holiday itself was perfect. The organisation of the cabins, the bars and all the trips was very slick and professional with absolutely no hassle at all

The boat was exactly as described, the guides were superb and of course Egypt itself was wonderful.

Many thanks for arranging this holiday for us.

542Bill & Jean DanielsUK Thanks for your welcome home note, regarding our recent Nile cruise.

Jean, my wife and I wanted a break from this cold weather so decided Egypt was a place to go to get some sunshine. We didn't expect too much from the holiday because we did a Nile cruise back in 1987 and the boat we had then, was small with tiny rooms with an inadequate shower .

However, when we arrived at Luxor, we were met at the airport by an Archers rep and taken to our ship, the "MAGIC 1". We were somewhat taken back by the ambience of the vessel. The reception area was like a first class hotel and our cabin was spacious with a full size window which occupied all of one side of the cabin and you could lie on your bed and view the banks of the Nile as you cruised along. It was sheer pleasure. The shower was spacious and provided a good jet of temperature controlled water.

After a briefing, we was introduced to an Egyptian Ecologist (we called Big Daddy) who accompanied us on all the trips and explained all the details to us regarding the temples we visited. What also was a good idea, we paid ten pounds each to cover all the tips for the coach drivers, temple attendants assistants etc, for the duration of the cruise. This saved us much hassle on all the trips.

This river cruise, was one of the most satisfying and pleasurable we had ever been on and in turn have passed these details to all our friends.

Thanks for a great river cruise; good value for the money.

542Jacquie GallaghanUK In all honesty I didn't know what to expect as I was travelling with my mum (we are 40 and 64) and had visions of a cruise holiday that perhaps wasn't suited to myself. How wrong could I have been?! Everyone we met was exceptionally friendly, it felt very personalised being only a smallish boat, and there were lots of people to get to know, and we made some friends along the way. Saying that, if you did want a private romantic trip, this could have been possible also.

I had booked two single cabins onboard MS Magic I - both were on Deck 3 to the rear of the boat. My single cabin was fully equipped with three round windows, two at the side and one at the rear. The cabin had a large single bed, wardrobes and dressing table. Fully equipped shower room. All was exceptionally clean, with beautifully decorated towels every day to come back to.

We were all inclusive on board and there was never a queue for drinks. In fact I often had a drink waiting for me when I was ambling up the deck… 'Another Lemonade Madam… '. The breakfast was always plentiful with an egg and crepe counter. So you could order fresh omelettes anyway you wanted them. There was also the additional variety of hot food and cold continental options. Breakfast was served to suit the tours and where the tours left very early, coffee was available, with full breakfast on your return. Tours were always back by lunchtime, where lunch was served in the restaurant, or on one occasion on deck. Evening meals were always plentiful, with a fresh pasta counter every night and also a carvery option, this could be beef, chicken or salmon. There were always vegetarian options available. On a positive note, we learned that all salads and foods were washed with bottled water and not one person on board our boat once had tummy troubles

The boat had 5 levels, restaurant on level 1, bar and reception on level 2, bazaars and library on level 3, bazaars on level 4 with the sun deck on level 5. Drinks were available in the bar and on the sundeck. There were plenty of sun loungers available and they have a strict policy in place to stop you reserving them and disappearing for the day (brilliant). The pool was very shallow, you could probably just about swim in it, but it was refreshing to cool off and exceptionally clean. There was entertainment most evenings and a fancy dress party one evening. Costumes were available to purchase on board and very reasonable prices.

Our Egyptologist with Archers was Galal, who was exceptionally informative. There were early starts but it was worth getting to the sites early and in some instances we were amongst the first to visit. We did the optional Abu Simbel excursion by flight, which was a very early start, but we were back on the boat by breakfast, and again we avoided the queues and the heat. The optional hot air balloon ride was also every bit that I had imagined. Both of these optional extras were superb.

All in all, all members of staff were superb, helpful, smiley and genuine and I can only describe our rep as a very excitable puppy (Christo), always there with a greeting and happy to see everyone on their return. He is by my reckoning the best resort representative I have ever had.

Only one negative point to the whole holiday, as we were travelling at the rear of the boat, we had engine noise on the first night travelling. This disrupted one night's sleep, but after that the boat only travelled during the daytime, so it did not bother us afterwards.

FANTASTIC TRIP J RECOMMENDED TO ANYONE J

542Yvonne ThomasUK In April I knew that I had made the best decision ever. I had wanted to do something special as it was my 60th so I booked a cruise on the Nile. I had wanted to do it for years.

I was a little apprehensive as I would be going alone, but I needn't have been. I made a request to be on as high a deck as possible. When I arrived on the boat, Magic 1, I was delighted to find that I was on deck four. Fantastic cabin with large picture window. The crew on board were very friendly and helpful but, sad to say, not the rep. The food was excellent and the choice too. The holiday was all inclusive apart from Abu Simbel, hot air ballooning and a couple of others. Every temple we visited was included in the price, even the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, except King Tut's, but our guide had said that the important relics were in Cairo, so I didn't bother.

Our Egyptologist, Galal, was excellent with a dry sense of humour. Thanks to his extensive knowledge I learned an great deal more than I had before I set off.

I must also thank the people that I shared my table, without whom my holiday might not have been the total success that it was. My birthday fell on the evening before the end of my stay and, as I was on the hot air balloon trip the following morning was on an early dinner. They weren't, but when I went to the restaurant, they were there with card and presents. If you are reading this, thank you again and get in touch.

542Denise HallUK We are pleased to say we are about to embark on our next holiday with you in August when we hope to visit China and take a trip on the Yangtze river. This may not seem remarkable other than this is our 3rd major trip in 10 months.

Our 1st holiday with Archers was the Great rift Valley in Kenya, blown away with the whole experience we were looking for a trip in February - what better that a Nile cruise and stay in Luxor? We thought we could not better the safari but had a wonderful time in Egypt, meeting a great bunch of fun loving people and making a host of new friends.

We hope that if the China trip is anything like the other 2 then we shall have a holiday to remember.

We are no spring chickens but have decided to live as much as we can before the bus pass is sent for, like lots of like minded people we think life is for living and we are trying to fit everything from our wish list in as soon as possible, thanks to Archers we have the opportunity to see the world the easy way. Thank you

542Dave & PaulineOxford We've just returned from another 2 week holiday with your firm.

The trip on the Nile was excellent. We travelled on the Magic 1 boat where all the crew made us feel relaxed and very welcome as did our Egyptologist Galal. The week on the Red Sea was also good although the food at the hotel was not quite so spectaular but the hotel staff also made us welcome.

We look forward to choosing our next holiday.

542Mrs C. BrownIsle of Man Is this really our 12th Archers Holiday? - this time a Nile Cruise aboard "Magic 1".

We were delighted with the ship - well equipped; comfortable; spacious; with a marvellous crew, and Jouseff our Guide who brought the ancient sites to life.

The whole adventure seemed to embrace so much. From the wild life along the Nile and the beautiful botanical gardens to the wonders of the temples, and especially the tombs in The Valley of the Kings, in all their magnificent splendour - with added awe and dimension when viewed again floodlit.

In Luxor we berthed near to the museums which were well worth a visit, and helped to enhance the images of ancient Egypt. Arising at 03.30am was a small penalty to pay for a sunrise trip in a hot-air balloon over The Valley of the Kings; the Nile and ancient sites in the Luxor area.

Life on board was not only relaxing but most entertaining at night, which we all enjoyed. The cuisine was of a high standard, and we visited the Galley to prove it. Everything was beautifully served and meticulously clean.

Although there are very many cruise vessels navigating between Luxor and Aswan we would thoroughly recommend the "Magic 1" with Archers. It just adds that extra something.

542A & B WilliamsBolton Just a little note to say thank you for a glorious holiday recently.

We travelled to Egypt and did "Wonders of the Nile" and a week at El Gouna over the Red Sea. Excellent value for money and the atmosphere on the boat was great.

We had a wonderful Egyptologist named Shareen and must congratulate you on the content.

542Carole & Michael PalmerUK We returned from Egypt after a wonderful week cruising the Nile and visiting all the temples to Aswan Dam. The Egyptianologist Ehab, (THE SILVER FOX) gave so much information it made us feel that we understood all about this ancient culture. Once we had all this information, we were able to digest it all relaxing on the sun deck of the cruise boat MAGIC 1. Being all-inclusive a gin and tonic went down well.

The extra week in Luxor at the Sonesta St. George was another experience; the entrance hall alone set the tone. The room that we had was magnificent with a wonderful view over the Nile, every morning we could see all the hot air balloons ascending over the Valley of the Kings. Having been up we knew what a wonderful feeling this was. The contrasts in Luxor have to be experienced - very exciting.

This was our first time in Egypt but it will not be the last. Thank you Archers for putting this package together.

542John & Sue BeareCamborne, Cornwall We were on deck 2 of MS Magic 1, where our cabin was towards the bow and was quiet. The upper decks, 3 and 4, had huge windows but we learned that some cabins in the stern were noisy, especially whilst under way.

Our Nile cruise started from Luxor during early evening, whilst we were busy finding seats and meeting new people in the dining room.
We sailed through the night, arriving at Edfu mid-morning, having passed quietly through Esna Lock during the night. Following our visit to the Temple of Horus we cruised on to Aswan, arriving during late evening.

The next two days were as per the itinerary, with visits to the two Aswan Dams, the Temple of Philae on an island and a trip on a felucca, a sailing boat taking about 20 passengers, visiting the botanical gardens on Kitchener's Island in the middle of the Nile.

We also invested in a visit to Abu Simbel where a huge temple has been moved block by block to avoid it being flooded when the Aswan High Dam was built over 20 years ago. We flew down on the 4.30am flight, taking half an hour, and were on site before dawn. The 150 people on the plane were the only ones there, so we had plenty of room to wander around inside the temple and look at the carvings. As we were leaving at about 8.15am there were thousands of people arriving after a 3 hour journey in convoys of buses. The Abu Simbel visit was expensive but worth it and the early flight was a real advantage, although at the time it seemed unnecessary as it was very cold waiting for sunrise.

In line with the programme we set off on the return leg to Luxor, mooring overnight at Kom Ombo having passed through the lock at Esna just after dark. Following our morning visit to a local temple, we continued our cruise back to Luxor where during the next two days we visited all the sites as advertised on the programme. Whilst visiting the ancient sites, we were in a group led by an Egyptologist named Galal, with the affectionate nickname of Big Daddy. Without his commentary we would have been looking at piles of stone with funny drawings or carvings on them but his knowledge and ability to make each site come alive was undoubtedly the icing on the cake.

Whilst at Luxor we visited a shopping arcade right opposite the moorings. It was next to the council offices. I mention this as we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were not mobbed by 'in your face' sellers. There was a general banter but no real pressure. It worked. We took a leisurely time to buy small presents to take home.

All meals on Magic 1 were self-service with a reasonable choice, although breakfast was very similar each day. The week was enhanced by the friendly helpful nature of all the crew, particularly our waiter and cabin boy.

We would thoroughly recommend the cruise although we were not totally prepared for the very cold biting wind of the first few days.

542Mrs L SeathCumbria Having just returned from our holiday 2 weeks ago to Egypt and the Red Sea, with your firm, we can't begin to say how much we enjoyed it.

The cruise was amazing. The crew were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble for them. The meals were exceptional, as was the whole package. The Red Sea Resort of El Gouna was a great resort, with plenty to do and so very clean.

I just wish we were back there. So congratulations to everyone for making this a memorable holiday.

542Mr & Mrs SmithLeicester We arrived at Gatwick Airport for our 2-week adventure. After a quick check in, we relaxed with a coffee before boarding our plane. 5 hours later we arrived in Egypt. We were greeted by a "flash rep". This company did an excellent job looking after us on Archers behalf. They were so efficient; they quickly sorted out visas so that we got through quicker and onto our coach.

On arrival at our boat, we had a welcome drink with our rep. The following day our adventure in Egypt started. We were split into three groups. We were introduced to our Egyptologist, Hazem, and he was our personal guide for the week. He was brilliant. He made the trips to the temples so interesting.

Each morning we were busy sightseeing but arrived back the boat for a welcome drink and lunch, then a relaxing afternoon on deck. The crew on board were friendly and helpful. We had a party night and most people dressed up. The shop on board was very busy with passengers all wanting to buy their Egyptian outfits.

At the end of a busy and enjoyable week, we travelled in a convoy to The Three Corners Rihana hotel, at El Gouna on the Red Sea. A beautiful place built on a series of Lagoons. The second week was a lovely relaxing week.

Sadly at the end of the week, it was back to Luxor, in convoy again. We arrived at the Sheraton Hotel in Luxor in time to have a last look for souvenirs, before catching the coach to the airport, thus ending another enjoyable holiday with Archers.

542Mrs J Glass & Mr A SpencerManchester In March of this year, we embarked on our seventh holiday with Archers. This one was different from others as we have never been on a cruise/city holiday, having always chosen coach tours. The holiday was called "Wonders of the Nile" and it lived up to its title in every way.

The cruise boat proved to be comfortable, clean and the staff were polite and attentive to sit on the deck having afternoon tea, watching life on the banks of the Nile was like having a dream. The excursions to the temples and tombs were exciting and made more real by the Egyptologist who accompanied our group. In the event we enjoyed the company of the new friends we had made on board. The highlight being the "Galabia" evening when people were invited to dress in local costume…this proved to be a night to remember and one that is talked about every time we speak to the others who have now become great friends.

Our second week was spent in Luxor at the 5 star "Sonesta St George". After the busy week visiting the sights this hotel was the ultimate in luxury. From room cleaners to pool attendants the service was second to none. Outside the hotel, Luxor was a bustling, noisy place with everyone having something to sell, but the Egyptians also have an excellent sense of humour and love to tell people about their culture. Going through doors of the hotel was like stepping into another world, one that offered everything for rest and relaxation. The pool area overlooked the Nile and across to the Valley of the Kings, as did our room. In the mornings, we would watch the hot air balloons rising into the air over the valley, the days would end with a meal eaten in one of the excellent restaurants followed by a drink either in the bar or sat outside in the garden watching the felucca's and cruise boats sailing by.

Thanks Archers for a wonderful time.

542G & M SpencerSheerness Now that the dust has settled and we have got back into the old routines, the recent excellent holiday seems a bit of a dream but an excellent dream to boot. So again (as last year with our trip to Greece) a big thank you to the Archers team for the superb planning and organisation for our trip.

Everything ran very smoothly, and even when there was a change of plan your local man from Liverpool (Steve) was on hand to advise and guide in his own charming and inimitable way.

We could not fault the organisation, the boat and the hotels were wonderful and we enjoyed the lap of five-star throughout, and the variety of experiences both included and optional made for a truly memorable holiday.

Thank you for the new brochure - Egypt will be a hard act to follow. Again our grateful thanks - we will be in touch for next year.
