Western Caribbean Cruise
10 DAYS FROM £1199

This holiday has departures available between: 14th Feb 2009 to 12th Dec 2009
582 M A Briggs Leicester Please find below our thoughts of our experience on your Western Caribbean Cruise

It was just like being in a floating hotel and we saw sunrises and sunsets out of our cabin window that we have never seen the likes of before. We decided on a Cruise and Stay, which was ideal for us as we had the glitz and glamour of a cruise liner with all that it had to offer, and a quieter resort stay afterwards.

The excursions were very varied - something for everyone - from water sports, scuba diving, snorkelling to historic sights and a lot in between. Just the whole atmosphere on board was buzzing and you were spoilt for choice on the menus. There was a daily news edition telling you what was going on each day in the way of events, and everything was so organised.

Our second week was a stay at Clearwater Beach, Florida where the beautiful white sands were even more spectacular in the sunshine. Here we could relax as we wished by the pool or the beach. You could make your own excursions if you wanted and there were miles of beach walks to do. It was strange using money again as on board ship you had a card set against your credit card that you presented when buying anything on board.

Our unforgettable holiday with so many treasured memories ended with a hurricane starting to head towards Florida; so we got out just in time. However, even that strong force couldn't dampen our excitement of this totally different type of holiday.

582 D H Holland Surrey We booked a Western Caribbean Cruise on Carnival Legend followed by six nights at Tradewinds Sandpiper Hotel at St Pete's Beach.

From Gatwick we flew BA to Tampa and from the airport The Bay Shuttle took us to our overnight hotel then to the port the following morning.

The liner is large. We took the balcony cabin option, which was superb. The décor of the ship is astounding, facilities included shops, casino, theatre, pools, bars, chapel, children's area and planned activities like bingo and deck competitions. The cleanliness throughout and restaurants were faultless. It was an opportunity to visit different places with sightseeing and snorkelling/diving trips.

The super shuttle to St Pete's Beach and the return was no problem, punctual on both occasions. St Pete's Beach is long, wide and sandy, the sea is warm. Again this year we saw dolphins as we were swimming.

The return overnight flight was as usual tiring but we arrived home safely and had enjoyed yet another Archer's holiday. Thank you.

582 Mrs S Dineley Merseyside We stood on the deck of the Carnival Legend at this 88,000 tons of floating hotel sailed away from Tampa, Florida en route to en exciting 7 day cruise round the Western Caribbean. Cabins are quite roomy and we were delighted each evening to find a towel sculpture made by our cabin steward, Carlos. The dining stewards gave impeccable service, remembered what you liked and also entertained with signing and dancing each evening. The food was excellent and plentiful.

In the evenings, we liked the Phantom Lounge where talented dancers, singers and comedians entertained in professional shows; Frankie and Johnny's bar, where an excellent group, Music Unlimited, performed an amazing Beatles Medley; Maguire's Sports Bar with sporting events shown on the TV screens around the room; a huge Casino and many other venues to suit all tastes.

It was almost (but not quite) a shame to leave the ship to enjoy the various ports of call. We went ashore at Grand Caymen and did a tour of the main attractions: the village of Hell (basically a rock formation which someone once thought looked like hell and the name stuck). You can buy souvenirs from the post office and send your postcards from Hell! We also visited the Turtle Farm and then went to Stringray City, a shallow, clear sandbar where lots of stringrays congregate. It was amazing to swim along them.

Other destinations included Cozumel, Mexico where we lazed in the sum at Playa Mia; and Belize, where we took a taxi round the city of Belize and learned more about the country from Francis, not only a knowledgeable taxi driver but a local celebrity as he used to be in the national Basketball team.

After a week afloat it was time to return to Tampa, after a truly unforgettable holiday.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1: UK - Tampa.
Fly to Tampa where you will be transferred to your hotel for one night.

DAY 2: Tampa.
This afternoon, transfer to the cruise terminal for embarkation. Your ship, Carnival Legend, will sail from Tampa at 4pm - gliding into the sunset. (D)

DAY 3: At sea.
A day at sea to get to grips with all the wonderful facilities your ship has to offer. Leave your watch behind and just relax on deck or in the pool, enjoy a leisurely al fresco lunch, or simply indulge yourself with a relaxing spa treatment. (B, L, D)

DAY 4: George Town, Grand Cayman.
Your first port of call is beautiful Grand Cayman, a stunning Caribbean island lapped by sparkling turquoise waters, rich with colourful marine life and spectacular coral reefs. Fringed with soft, white-sand beaches and lush tropical palms, this paradise island has plenty to offer visitors. Soak up the sun on Seven Mile Beach and visit the unique Cayman Turtle Farm for a swim with the famous stingrays and turtles. Stroll around George Town, one of the leading shopping centres in the Caribbean region, with its range of boutiques and duty free shops, or head to the harbour front, home to traditional Caymanian gingerbread-style buildings. For a novelty, stop by the local limestone formations named 'Hell', from where you can send postcards proving you've been 'to Hell and back'. (B, L, D)

DAY 5: Cozumel.
Cozumel is the largest island in the Mayan Caribbean, and derives its name from the Mayans who once inhabited the island and believed it to be a sacred place. Its name translates to 'Land of the Swallows', in reference to the indigenous birds living on the island. Cozumel's limestone shore is surrounded by crystal clear waters, which range from sparkling aquamarine to deep, velvety indigo. Due to the seemingly endless reefs and great water visibility, Cozumel is considered by many to be the finest dive destination in the Atlantic. Today, you can visit a Mayan archaeological site, go snorkelling, shop for silver and leather goods in the many craft stores, or meet the Bottlenose dolphins in Chankanaab National Park. (B, L, D)

DAY 6: Belize City.
This colourful Caribbean city is the former capital of Belize. Spend time in the old city, with its colourful, wooden colonial houses, narrow streets, and edgy modern structures, which provide the city with a unique character. Do not miss St John's Cathedral, built in 1847 and the oldest, most important Anglican Church in Central America, or the famous lighthouse, which marks the grave of the Portuguese Baron, a man who left a great fortune to Belize. Pay a visit to the fascinating Community Baboon Sanctuary, home to many Howler Monkeys which are known as 'baboons' in the Creole language. These primates live in a near-perfect wild habitat: the lush, rich forest alongside the fertile Belize River. You could also spend the day enjoying one of several activities including horseback riding, snorkelling, or venturing further afield to explore ancient Mayan cities. (B, L, D)

DAY 7: Roatan Island.
Blessed with powdery-white sand beaches, stunning natural surrounds and lusciously rich tropical forests, Roatan Island is a paradise for beach and nature lovers alike. Set amidst the beautiful Bay Islands, off the north coast of Honduras, Roatan is lapped by the warm, clear waters of the Caribbean Sea and offers spectacular watersports opportunities including kayaking, swimming with dolphins, snorkelling and scuba diving amidst the magnificent coral reefs. Perhaps explore the island itself on a discovery tour of the east or west coast, head inland to experience the rugged and beautiful, wildlife-rich Gumbalimba Park - where a wide range of optional activities ensures you can be as active or relaxed as you like, or simply relax and enjoy one of the many palm-fringed, pristine beaches. (B, L, D)

DAY 8: At sea.
Enjoy a full day at sea to take advantage of all the facilities, games and sports your ship has to offer. (B, L, D)

DAY 9: Tampa - UK.
On arrival at the cruise terminal, you will be met and transferred to the airport for your flight to the UK. (B)

DAY 10: Home landing in the UK.

Note: The cruise itinerary is subject to change in cases such as adverse weather conditions. On 10 Jan 2009 departure the cruise will visit Costa Maya, Mexico on day 7 and not Roatan Island.
