Holiday Itinerary
DAY 1: UK - Tallinn.
Fly to Tallinn where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for a two-night stay.
DAY 2: Tallinn. Included sightseeing.
Tallinn is one of Europe's most intriguing cities and is dominated by ancient walls, turrets and spires - a reminder of its history as one of the best fortified cities in medieval Europe. Start today with free time to explore the winding cobbled streets before joining the included city sightseeing tour this afternoon to appreciate Tallinn's unique history and beauty. The Old Town, now on the World Heritage List, is certainly one of the most interesting parts of the city. Other main highlights include the Hanseatic Merchant Houses, the mile long town wall, the medieval town hall, the House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, Toompea Castle, Dome Cathedral and the Alexander Nevsky Church. (B, D)
DAY 3: Tallinn - Tartu (included sightseeing) - Sigulda.
Leave Tallinn this morning and journey southeastward to Tartu, the oldest town in the Baltics, situated between the country's two largest lakes: the Peipsi and the Vortsjarv. Enjoy an interesting city sightseeing tour with a local guide. En-route to Sigulda, we drive through Gauja National Park, known as 'Livonian Switzerland', which is dotted with medieval castle ruins, picturesque countryside and a unique variety of fauna and flora. Overnight stay in Sigulda. (B, D)
DAY 4: Sigulda - Pilsrundale - Vilnius.
An interesting journey today as you travel across Latvia to Pilsrundale for a visit to the Baroque-styled Runsdale Palace, a former summer residence of the Duke of Courland. The palace was built by the great architect Rastrelli, who also designed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, Russia. Later, continue across the border into Lithuania for a two-night stay in the Lithuanian capital. (B, D)
DAY 5: Vilnius. Included sightseeing.
Vilnius has been the capital of Lithuania since the 13th century and is a city with a strong Polish influence. After breakfast, join the included city sightseeing tour. The itinerary includes the Old Town with St Stanislav's Cathedral, Gediminas Tower, the Hill of Three Crosses, the Old University, the Gate of Dawn and the Amber Gallery. In the afternoon enjoy some time at leisure or take the optional excursion to visit the famous Trakai Castle. This evening enjoy an optional folklore dinner. (B)
DAY 6: Vilnius - Kaunas (included sightseeing) - Riga.
This morning we travel in a westerly direction for a visit to Kaunas, located at the confluence of the rivers Nemunas and Neris. It is a bustling city full of activity and also an important university centre. The included sightseeing tour with a local guide includes the Old Town with the ruins of Kaunas Castle, the Cathedral and the Old Town Hall. From Kaunas, journey to the impressive Hill of Crosses, near Siauliai. As the country's best known pilgrimage site, the many thousands of crosses form a unique monument of pilgrimage, national identity, and Christian devotion. The final part of our journey today takes us across the border into Lativa for a two-night stay in the capital. (B, D)
DAY 7: Riga. Included sightseeing.
The capital of Latvia is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Baltics, not least because it houses a resplendent array of architecture and the largest collection of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. This morning, experience the best of the city on an included city sightseeing tour and learn about the area's fascinating 800-year history. Founded as a trading town in 1201 by Bishop Albert of Bremen, head of the Order of Teutonic Knights, Riga has flourished into a prosperous city yet its Old Town still retains a medieval-style maze of narrow streets dotted with parks, waterways, impressive architecture and lofty church spires. Highlights of the Old Town include Riga Castle and the Dome Cathedral. This afternoon, you are free to explore the city at your leisure. (B)
