Highlights of Portugal
8 DAYS FROM £519

704 Mr P Fagg Middlesex I am writing to say thank you for a wonderful holiday booked through Archers Direct.

We have just returned from the Highlights of Portugal tour followed by a week in the Hotel Vila Gale Marina Vilamoura. We found everything on this holiday to be superb, excellent itinerary, excursions and hotels. We found the Hotel Vila Gale Marina to be first class, lovely room with sea views, great food and friendly staff.

We have been on a good many Cosmos/Archers holidays and have enjoyed everyone. I felt you would like to receive some positive feedback - a holiday that was totally free from criticism. Look forward to travelling with Archers again

704 Dr G. T. Bell Renfrewshire My wife and I have been on eight Archers/Cosmos holidays and we have just signed up for the ninth. And I expect there will be many more. We endlessly chat about hot good they have all been and we can never agree about what was best or even about what was the best things we have seen - it is a very good-natured argument.

My own favourites have been Alhambra, Canada, the Mezquita at Cordoba and the awesome Neuschwanstein Castle while my wife simply loved Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore, the magical island of Capri, and the Tuscan countryside. What we can agree, however, is that every holiday has been terrific - we have seen wonderful things and been to great places. We also have had excellent tour directors and our fellow travelling companions have all been great company - every holiday has been a winner, only personal preference provokes discussion. As soon as the new Archers brochure comes out it is avidly studied - it is my favourite book! We are looking forward to more travels in 2007.

Thanks to all at Archers for some truly wonderful holidays.

This morning start your journey northwards to reach Tomar for sightseeing. You'll visit the Templar Castle and Convent of the Knights of Christ. Its history goes back to 1160 when it was built as a convent fortress as the headquarters of the Knights' Templars of Portugal. It was this order which a few hundred years later financed Prince Henry the navigator, its grand Master during his great expeditions of the African coast and Indies. Next stop is Fatima. Mix with the pilgrims at the country's hallowed national shrine, Fatima's Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. Further north to Coimbra for an overnight stay. (B, D)

Start your day with an included orientation tour of Coimbra. Famous for its university and a very inspiring and romantic location on a hillside just above the River Mondego. Next journey to Viseu famous for its DAO vineyards. Stop in Lamego not far from the Douro Valley. Later this afternoon travel to the foot of the Serra Do Marao for a short stop in Villa Real to visit the gardens of Portugal's most famous villa, the 'Casa de Mateus' - prettily surrounded by orchards and vineyards. Finally to Oporto for two nights. (B, D)

DAY 4: Oporto.
Join the included sightseeing with local guide in Oporto this morning, taking in many of the city's highlights. This afternoon, don't miss out on the optional visit to nearby Guimaraes known as the 'Cradle of Portugal' since it was here that the young Alfonso Enriques who after defeating the Moors in 1139 was proclaimed King of Portugal by his own troops. (B)

DAY 5: Oporto - Batalha - Alcobaca - Obidos - Lisbon.
Drive south for a day full of interesting highlights. First stop is Batalha to visit its magnificently gabled monastery, a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic and Manueline architecture. By way of Alcobaca reach Obidos for a stop. This fortified city is flanked by round towers and bastions overlooking the countryside dotted with windmills. Finally to Lisbon for three nights. (B, D)

Henry the Navigator made Lisbon the 15th-century mistress of the seas.
