Your Choice of Resorts

Lake Garda One of Europe's most breathtaking sights and Italy's largest lake. Colourful citrus and olive groves proliferate in its delightful Mediterranean climate to the south, whilst the grandeur of the Alps forms a backdrop to charming old towns.
RIVA Set amongst beautiful mountain scenery at the north of the lake, Riva boasts a 12th Century fortress and clock tower in the centre of its old town. There are narrow streets lined with a variety of shops and restaurants. Boats and pedalos can be hired to take a trip out on the lake.
LIMONE A quaint, colourful town on the west shore of Lake Garda, Limone is known for its olive groves, citrus greenhouses and exotic array of plants and flowers. The narrow cobbled shopping streets of this lovely town and the delightful harbour area, which boasts an excellent choice of bars and restaurants, all combine to make this the perfect lakeside holiday destination.
MALCESINE On the eastern shore of Lake Garda, at the foot of Monte Baldo, Malcesine is dominated by the 14th century Scaliger Castle which rises sheer out of the lake. It is a picturesque resort with a small harbour and a pretty old town, which teems with shops, cafés and restaurants. There's a choice of pebble beaches and plenty of scenic walks nearby. To make the most of the stunning scenery, try the rotating panoramic cable car to the top of Monte Baldo, a great starting point for a walk, with amazing views across neighbouring valleys.

Transfer time from Venice to Lake Garda: Up to 4hrs approximately.

Out & About

Places to visit from Garda include the magnificent Dolomites, Bolzano with its 'Iceman' and of course delightful Verona.

Activities

Apart from enjoying the delights of the lake and its surroundings, like swimming and walking (excellent walking can be found at the top of Monte Baldo via the cable car), you can take a boat trip across or around the lake (a daily service goes from top to bottom and vice versa, stopping off at the resorts enroute). You'll find waterskiing and windsurfing are available in Riva and Malcesine, whilst Torbole is a magnet for sailing.

Shopping

Most resorts have the usual tourist-type shops, offering olive oils, ceramics, postcards, leather goods, t-shirts and jewellery, most of which are reasonably priced. Garda itself has the widest choice being the largest town, with Riva probably the next 'best' in terms of variety.

Food & Drink

A marvellous array of food awaits, from deliciously tempting ice-creams (a speciality of Italy) to fresh pasta, seafood and of course pizza. Favourite tipples include Prosecco, a sparkling wine, Limoncello, a sweet aperitif best served chilled, and the local wine of the region, red Bardolino which is very well-known and widely available. You'll also find Valpolicella and Valdadige as red alternatives and the very well respected Soave, if you prefer white.

Beaches

There are no sandy beaches around the lake, but you will find good pebble ones in all the key resorts as well as some grassy areas from which to swim.

Weather

There's a marked contrast in temperatures between north and south, with Garda being around 5 degrees hotter than Riva. If you venture up Monte Baldo, it is wise to take a long-sleeved item, as even in the middle of summer, it can be chilly and in the clouds.

Your choice of Operas and 2009 schedule
Aida

20, 25 June; 4, 22, 31 July; 8, 18, 27 August.
One of the grandest spectacles in the operatic repertoire, Verdi's most popular opera was written for the Khedive of Egypt in 1870. Set in ancient Egypt, it tells the story of Aida, a captive Ethiopian Princess and her tragic love affair with Radames, the Captain of the Egyptian Guard.
Tosca
15, 19, 22, 26, 29 August.
This deeply intense and intricate Opera chronicles the story of Tosca, and the lengths to which she will go to save the man she loves. Tosca's love is Cavaradossi, whose republican sympathies have made him an enemy in Scarpia, the chief of police. Scarpia tries to trick Tosca into leading him to Cavaradossi, however Tosca realises Scarpia harbours a secret affection for her and uses this to her advantage. There unfolds a fascinating series of deceptions as Tosca battles for her love.
Carmen
19, 27 June; 9, 18, 30 July; 13, 20, 28 August.
Set in Spain, George Bizzets spectacle has become one of the world's most-loved operas. Carmen runs away to become a smuggler with Jose, a soldier. Jose gets news that his mother is dying and leaves Carmen to rush to her bedside. When the lovers are re-united Carmen, angry at Jose for leaving, announces she no longer loves him. However Jose will not let the girl he loves walk away.
Turandot
26 June; 3, 10, 17, 29 July; 4, 7 August.
Unfolding in ancient Peking, this glittering opera from the pen of Puccini centres on a cold-hearted princess - named Turandot - who has sworn never to let love possess her. Pursued by a succession of enthusiastic but doomed suitors who must solve three mysterious riddles to win her hand, the determination of an unknown Prince finally melts her heart and persuades her to embrace the joys of true love.
Il Barbiere di Siviglia
11, 15, 25 July; 1, 6, 14 August.
Set in 17th century Seville, this comic opera composed by Gioachino Rossini was first performed in Rome in 1816 and is based on Pierre Beaumarchais's play 'The Barber of Seville'. The story describes the attempts of Count Almaviva to whisk away the beautiful Rosina, kept under lock and key by the rich ward Dr Bartolo who also desires to marry her for her fortune. It takes all the efforts of the ingenious Figaro, the barber, to eventually contrive the happy union of Rosina and Almaviva.
