Holiday Itinerary
DAY 1: UK - Halifax.
Fly to Halifax where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for a two night stay.
DAY 2: Halifax. Included sightseeing.
Halifax is a bustling city with an international flair, and has a rich history as a British stronghold. Highlights include Citadel Hill with its 19th-century star-shaped fort, the beautiful Public Gardens, the city's peaceful residential neighbourhoods, and bustling harbourfront which resonates with its military heritage. You'll also see Fairview Lawn Cemetery, the final resting-place for over 100 people who perished on the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic. The afternoon is yours to relax or explore further, so why not head to the Halifax Waterfront where you can visit Alexander Keith's brewery or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. The waterfront also features a myriad of traditional pubs, which serve up local ales and Gaelic tunes. Be sure to savour some delicious traditional dishes like Lunenburg pudding, Acadian rappie pie or planked salmon slow cooked over a hardwood fire.
DAY 3: Halifax - Baddeck. Included visit to Alexander Graham Bell Museum.
An early morning journey to rugged Cape Breton Island, one of the earliest European settlements in North America. Next, on to Baddeck, summer home of the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell, where he spent his last years. There's time to explore the exciting museum, which exhibits his world-changing inventions.
DAY 4: Baddeck - Cabot Trail - Cheticamp - Baddeck.
This morning experience the stunning Cabot Trail, a highway carved into the sides of mountains rising hundreds of metres above the sea. Travel through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, skirt rugged coastal headlands, and pass through villages where Scottish tradition still flourishes. Before leaving the Cabot Trail, we stop at the Acadian fishing village of Cheticamp.
DAY 5: Baddeck - Charlottetown.
Today we head to the peninsula and Caribou, where a ferry takes us across the Northumberland Strait to the spectacular Prince Edward Island. Your next two nights are in Charlottetown, the Island's Capital City and Canada's birthplace. This is where the Fathers of Confederation met to discuss the union of Canada in 1864. The afternoon is free to explore this delightful colonial town. Tonight take a stroll along the colourful Great George Street and the restored waterfront, to really get a feel for the city.
DAY 6: Prince Edward Island National Park. Included sightseeing.
Today's sightseeing includes the Island's stunning PEI National Park boasting forests, sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, salt marshes and some of the finest beaches in eastern Canada. You'll also visit Ann of Green Gables Farmhouse, the setting for Lucy Maude Montgomery's much-loved book. A suggestion for this evening is an optional outing to the Charlottetown Festival and 'Ann of Green Gables - the Musical'.
Note: The 'Ann of Green Gables - the Musical' performance is available during July, August and September.
DAY 7: Charlottetown - Le Pays de la Sagouine - Included visit to the Olivier Soapery - Moncton.
This morning travel across the eight-mile Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick and the charming Acadian Village of Bouctouche, to explore Le Pays de la Sagouine in its enchanting natural setting. Le Pays, a real life village, is alive with theatre, music, comedy and dance, allowing visitors to discover the unique Acadian culture. Next stop is the Olivier Soapery, where you will learn the traditional craft of soap-making from the 19th century and experience exquisite aromas during your guided tour of the museum and workshop. Tonight, an unmissable lobster experience! Join us on the optional lobster cruise, where you haul in a lobster trap, learn cooking techniques and savour a complete lobster dinner served on board your vessel.
DAY 8: Moncton - Fredericton. Included orientation tour.
Today, travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick's capital, for an orientation tour taking in Christ Church Cathedral and the historic Garrison District. After lunch continue to the St John River Valley and Kings Landing Historical Settlement, a recreation of a loyalist village 150 years ago, complete with creaking wagons, workhorses, the distant melodies from lively fiddlers and dancing townsfolk, all accented by splendid river views.
DAY 9: Fredericton - St Andrews - Saint John. Included whale-watching cruise.
Prepare for an adventure this morning, starting at quaint St Andrews by the Sea where you'll embark on a whale-watching trip amid dramatic seascapes and scenic lighthouses. The Bay of Fundy has been described as one of the most intriguing places on earth to visit. It has a galaxy of over 20 species of whale including Minkes, Finbacks, Humpbacks and the rare Right Whale. Afterwards, time to enjoy the shops lining Water Street, before following the beautiful Fundy Coast to Saint John, the 'Fundy City'.
DAY 10: Saint John. Included sightseeing - St Martins. Included excursion.
The day begins with a city sightseeing tour which includes stops at the intriguing Reversing Falls (where the water flows backwards) forced by incoming tides, and the bustling Old City Market. After shopping for handicrafts, we continue to the quaint fishing village of St Martins - known as 'The Heart of the Bay of Fundy' - to view the harbour, twin covered bridges and explore the breathtaking Fundy Trail. Return to Saint John with time to relax, shop or explore further. Make sure you taste New Brunswick's local specialities, such as fiddleheads (delicious violin-shaped ferns that grow along the riverbanks), tarte au sucre (a Brayonnne sugar pie) or poutine (grated raw and mashed potatoes wrapped around fresh pork).
DAY 11: Saint John - Halifax.
On our way to Halifax, you'll visit Hopewell Rocks, where you can 'walk the Ocean Floor' to witness the world's highest and wildest tides. They can rise to an incredible 52 feet - the height of a four-storey building. In the evening we arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia's modern capital.
DAY 12: Halifax - Peggy's Cove - Lunenburg - Halifax.
We hug the craggy coastline this morning as we travel to one of Canada's most photographed locations, the overwhelmingly beautiful Peggy's Cove, overlooked by North America's only lighthouse with a post office. Our next stop in Lunenburg, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Old Town Lunenburg, founded in 1753, is an outstanding example of British colonial settlement in North America. During your free time, why not see historic buildings and stately heritage homes that add to the unique charm of Lunenburg's tree-lined streets or spend some time in the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, home of Canada's most famous tall ship, Bluenose II (a replica of the original). This evening is at your leisure for last minute shopping or a relaxing harbour stroll.
