Canadian Coastal Adventure
14 DAYS FROM £1625

This holiday has departures available between: 8th Jun 2011 to 7th Sep 2011
767Judy YhapUK I have just returned from the Canadian costal adventure tour and just had to write to say how fantastic it was.

Having fallen in love with the Anne of Green Gables stories as a youngster, it was an area I always wanted to visit and I am happy to say I was totally enchanted with the lovely Prince Edward Island where the stories are set. The delightful surroundings captured by Lucy Montgomery in her books were there to be enjoyed by everyone and wandering through the house and barn, I almost expected Anne or Marilla to appear.

The highlight of the tour for me was when we visited a shop where everyone was invited to become Anne, and you can see the hilarious results in the photos. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Cape Breton were equally delightful. The pace of the tour was just right, allowing enough time for sightseeing and of course the numerous obligatory shopping expeditions.

Mel our tour director was most efficient and has put together a montage of photos of us and the places we visited which we all look forward to seeing. The only down side was the weather, summer had not arrived when I was there; but then neither had the hordes of visitors who descend on the area once the schools are closed. I reckon that having the place virtually to ourselves more than compensated for the cooler temperatures.

I would thoroughly recommend the Maritime Provinces if you are looking for a relaxed holiday with loads of delicious food.

767Ann and Glyn YoungCheshire We have just returned from the above touring holiday which was excellent. It was varied and always interesting with so much to do.

This holiday depended so much on the quality of the tour director and the skill and ability of the driver. Both were exceptional. The tour director was without doubt the best, most accomplished we've had and used her experience and love of the area where she lived to great effect. Our driver, Ed, was equally skilled and worked well with Claudette. His rapport with her and the group was superb.

We've done countless coach holidays including eight to North America. This was the best for the experience and the quality of the personnel.

767Walter and June NelsonChippenham We travelled on the Canadian Coastal Adventure and wish to say how much we enjoyed the tour. The content of the tour was wonderful, but the tour was made more memorable by the driver, Mr Don McKinnon, and your tour manager, Mr Peter McLearn. They complimented one another with their knowledge of the area and the facilities available. They were both courteous and concerned and always in good humour.

Mr McKinnon was an excellent driver, with his passengers always forefront in his mind. Mr Peter McLearn, the tour manager was extraordinary in the depth of his knowledge of the areas through which we travelled and he imparted all the information in his easy manner and his humour was thoroughly enjoyable. We had thirteen days of enjoyment, wonderful vistas, great information and lots of fun.

The hotels you selected were very good and convenient, except for the hotel in Monkton, which did not have a restaurant, nor were there any convenient alternatives. Maybe you will look into this?

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1: UK - Halifax.
Fly to Halifax where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for two nights.

DAY 2: Halifax.
Halifax is a bustling city with an international flair, and has a rich history as a British stronghold. Highlights include Citadel Hill with its 19th century star-shaped fort, the beautiful Public Gardens, the peaceful residential neighbourhoods, and bustling harbourfront which resonates with its military heritage. You'll also see Fairview Lawn Cemetery, the final resting place for over 100 people who perished on the ill-fated voyage of the Titanic. The afternoon is yours to relax or explore further, so why not head to the Halifax Waterfront where you can visit Alexander Keith's brewery or the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Be sure to savour some delicious traditional dishes like Lunenburg pudding, Acadian rappie pie or planked salmon, slow cooked over a hardwood fire.

DAY 3: Halifax - Baddeck.
An early morning journey to rugged Cape Breton Island, one of the earliest European settlements in North America. Next, on to Baddeck, summer home of the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell. There's time to explore the exciting museum, which exhibits his world-changing inventions.

DAY 4: Baddeck - Cabot Trail - Cheticamp - Baddeck.
This morning experience the stunning Cabot Trail, a highway carved into the sides of mountains rising hundreds of metres above the sea. Travel through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, skirt rugged coastal headlands, and pass through villages where Scottish tradition still flourishes. Before leaving the Cabot Trail, stop at the Acadian fishing village of Cheticamp.

DAY 5: Baddeck - Charlottetown.
Today head to the peninsula and Caribou, for a ferry across the Northumberland Strait to spectacular Prince Edward Island. Your next two nights are in Charlottetown, the island's capital city and Canada's birthplace, where the Fathers of Confederation met to discuss the union of Canada in 1864. The afternoon is free to explore this delightful colonial town.

DAY 6: Prince Edward Island National Park.
Sightseeing includes the stunning PEI National Park boasting forests, sand dunes, sandstone cliffs, salt marshes and some of eastern Canada's finest beaches. You'll also visit Ann of Green Gables Farmhouse, the setting for Lucy Maude Montgomery's much-loved book. A suggestion for this evening is an optional outing to the Charlottetown Festival and 'Ann of Green Gables - the Musical'.
Note: The 'Ann of Green Gables - the Musical' performance is available during July, August and September.

DAY 7: Charlottetown - Moncton.
This morning, enjoy a Scottish themed musical performance held at the College of Piping. Experience a combination of Highland dancing, bag piping, snare drumming, and Prince Edward step dancing. Afterwards, travel across the eight-mile Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick. Visit the Olivier Soapery, where you will learn the traditional craft of soap-making from the 19th century during your guided tour of the museum and workshop. Tonight, an unmissable experience with an optional lobster cruise, where you haul in a lobster trap, learn cooking techniques and savour a complete lobster dinner served on board.

DAY 8: Moncton - Miramichi.
First stop today is the Irving Eco-centre, which was developed to help preserve 'La Dune de Bouctouche', a twelve kilometre sand spit which stretches across Bouctouche Bay. Afterwards continue to Miramichi, located at the mouth of the world famous salmon-angling Miramichi River. There is time to explore the boardwalk, art galleries and restaurants of pretty Ritchie Wharf Park on the waterfront.

DAY 9: Miramichi - Fredericton.
Today, travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick's capital, for an orientation tour taking in Christ Church Cathedral and the historic Garrison District. After lunch continue to the St John River Valley and Kings Landing Historical Settlement, a recreation of a loyalist village 150 years ago, complete with creaking wagons, workhorses, the distant melodies from lively fiddlers and dancing townsfolk. The evening is at leisure.

DAY 10: Fredericton - St Andrews - Saint John.
Prepare for an adventure this morning, starting at quaint St Andrews by-the-Sea where you'll embark on a whale-watching trip amid dramatic seascapes and scenic lighthouses in the Bay of Fundy, often described as one of the most intriguing places on earth. It has a host of over 20 species of whale including Minkes, Finbacks, Humpbacks and the rare Right Whale. Afterwards, time to enjoy the shops lining Water Street, before following the beautiful Fundy Coast to Saint John. The rest of the day is free, so why not visit the Old City Market to see the colourful local food and crafts at a traditional Farmer's Market? Make sure you taste New Brunswick's local specialities, such as fiddleheads (delicious violin-shaped ferns), tarte au sucre (a Brayonne sugar pie) or poutine (grated raw and mashed potatoes wrapped around fresh pork).

DAY 11: Saint John - Hopewell Rocks - Halifax.
On the way to Halifax, you'll stop at Hopewell Rocks, the site of the world's highest and wildest tides, which can rise to an incredible 52 feet - the height of a four-storey building. In the evening arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia's modern capital.

DAY 12: Halifax - Peggy's Cove - Lunenburg - Halifax.
Hug the craggy coastline this morning en route to one of Canada's most photographed locations, the overwhelmingly beautiful Peggy's Cove, overlooked by North America's only lighthouse with a post office. Next stop is Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Old Town Lunenburg, founded in 1753, is an outstanding example of British colonial settlement. During your free time, why not see historic buildings and stately heritage homes that add to the unique charm of Lunenburg's tree-lined streets or visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, home of Canada's most famous tall ship, Bluenose II (a replica of the original). This evening is at your leisure.

DAY 13: Halifax - UK.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.

DAY 14: Home landing in the UK.

Maximum elevation on this tour is 1,500 ft.
