Wonders of Ancient Greece
10 DAYS FROM £814

This holiday has departures available between: 28th Mar 2009 to 24th Oct 2009
787 Linda Finch UK We have just returned from our 6th Archers holiday and feel that this was the best of them all.

Each day surpassed the one before, there was so much to see and the days were well planned with visits and travelling interspersed so we didn't feel as though the whole week was spent on a bus! Our tour guide, Marianna, was excellent, and our driver, Leo, was also fantastic. We had a great time, and shared it with a group of lovely people on our coach.

Greece is such a beautiful country with amazing scenery and so much history. We recommend going at early season (April / May) as the flowers and blossom on the trees and beautiful and the weather glorious - just warm enough to sight see comfortably in t-shirt and shorts!

A fantastic holiday not to be missed!

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1: UK - Athens.
Fly to Athens where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for two nights.

DAY 2: Athens. At leisure.
A day to do just as you please. Or why not join an optional day cruise to the islands of Aegina, Hydra and Poros? In the evening there will be free time to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the tavernas and nightclubs in the old Plaka district with its narrow streets and sound of bouzouki music. (B)

DAY 3: Athens (included sightseeing) - Corinth Canal - Epidaurus - Nauplia.
Join the included sightseeing tour of Athens featuring the highlights of this ancient capital. Next westward to the Corinth Canal. Journey into the Argolis to make a stop in Epidaurus located in the hilly countryside dotted with pine trees and oleanders. In this magnificent setting you'll visit the open-air theatre, which can still seat 14,000 spectators. Head for the coast and overnight in Nauplia. (B, D)

DAY 4: Nauplia - Mycenae - Sparta.
This morning enjoy the included excursion with a local guide to Mycenae, a city fortress accursed of the Gods, rich in the gold of warrior kings. Head south in the afternoon, deep into the Peloponnese, to Sparta for one night. (B, D)

DAY 5: Sparta - Mystra - Pylos.
Your morning highlight will be a visit to the medieval Byzantine citadel of Mystra, at one time known as 'The Florence of the East'. In the afternoon carry on to Pylos, located on a quaint bay on the Messenian Gulf, for one night. (B, D)

DAY 6: Pylos - Nestor's Palace - Chora - Olympia.
Drive north this morning to see the Nestor's Palace archaeological site. Shortly after, the visit to the Chora Museum will help you visualise its past splendour and imagine the grandness of this Mycenean palace. Later travel north-west to Olympia, the legendary venue of the Olympic games, which every four years engaged the city-states in sport instead of war. (B)

DAY 7: Olympia - Delphi.
Focus on Olympia where the athletes of antiquity performed in honour of the King of Deities. Learn more about the history of the Olympic games on the optional sightseeing tour. In the afternoon, drive north via the spectacular newly built bridge between Rion and Antirion and stop to admire this wonder of contemporary architecture, widely considered to be an engineering masterpiece. Later, proceed through the picturesque villages, along the south coast of the mainland, to magnificent Delphi, for one night. (B)

DAY 8: Delphi - Kalambaka.
At leisure in Delphi or join the optional morning sightseeing of Delphi archaeological site. Once called 'The Navel of the Earth' Delphi was the greatest Oracle of the ancient world, where people flocked to seek advice. Now it's one of the grandest sights in Greece; its theatre and Temple of Apollo still stand in their lovely natural setting. In the afternoon drive north, via Lamia and Trikala, for one night in Kalambaka. (B, D)

DAY 9: Kalambaka - Meteora - Athens.
A short drive to Meteora, which is a cluster of monastic buildings, perched in an unforgettable manner on a set of rising rock formations. Your included visit is certainly the day's highlight. Later drive south to Athens for an overnight stay. This evening, why not join our optional dinner at a typical Greek restaurant? (B)

DAY 10: Athens - UK.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK. (B)
