Alaska & the Yukon
14 DAYS FROM £1960

This holiday has departures available between: 13th May 2009 to 2nd Sep 2009
805 Penny Thompson UK I am pleased to enclose a short report about my wonderful Archers holiday in Alaska and the Yukon.

My tour of Alaska and the Yukon was fantastic and far exceed my high expectations! Our tour director, Brian, and driver, Doc, were excellent; they were a mine of information about the area.

We were an international group from various English-speaking countries. The programme was very varied. It included quaint old towns, such as Skagway and Dawson City, and impressive landscapes. We heard all about the Gold Rush and we tried gold panning ourselves.

We travelled by coach, train and boat and on an optional excursion in a small plane as well. Some great sightseeing trips were included. We got really close to some spectacular glaciers on the 26 Glacier Cruise. The river tour in Fairbanks on the sternwheeler Discovery was one of the highlights of the trip for me.

I was especially interested in Athabascan culture, which was explained in the Chena Village. We watched a bush plane take off from the water and learned a lot about huskies and the Iditarod dog sled race.

I booked quite a few optional tours because I wanted to see as much as possible. I particularly enjoyed the Arctic Circle trip. It was fascinating to learn about life in an isolated wilderness community from someone who has chosen this way of life.

The Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park and Reserve was amazing: we saw moose, caribou, a ptarmigan, Dall sheep, a snowshoe hare and five grizzly bears (one came really close to our bus).

The weather was much better than I was expecting: we only had two rainy days and it was pleasantly warm most of the time. At the end of August there were hardly any mosquitoes.

I had read a lot about Alaska before my holiday but it was still full of surprises for me. You can't really imagine the vast expanse of unspoilt countryside, you have to see it for yourself.

805 John & Gillian Effingham UK We went on your tour to Alaska and it exceeded our expectations. The Tour Director and driver were first class, making sure no-one missed any points of interest and assisting in every way possible. You have a great team working for you.

We booked the Alaska holiday after going on an Archers Trans Canada holiday in 2003 which had the same high standard.

I have worked in the coach and tour industry in the UK and Europe and I appreciate the work that goes into successful tours.

p.s. The service from your administration was excellent when I phoned them.

Holiday Itinerary

DAY 1: UK - Anchorage.
Fly to Anchorage where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel for two nights.

DAY 2: Anchorage. Included glacier cruise.
Journey to Whittier on Prince William Sound and board your deluxe catamaran for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, cruising College and Harriman Fjords to view as many as 26 tidewater and hanging glaciers. There is a good chance of spotting whales, seals and eagles. Return to Anchorage in the early evening.

DAY 3: Anchorage - Tok.
Travel north-east through the lush farming region of the Matanuska Valley. Up over scenic Tahnita Pass with spectacular vistas of Matanuska Glacier. Travel along the vast Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve. The area boasts glaciers larger than the island of Manhattan and nine of the sixteen highest peaks in North America. Overnight in Tok, the 'dog sled capital of the world'.

DAY 4: Tok - Whitehorse.
Join the Alaska Highway and follow along the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge. Behold the spectacular vistas of Kluane National Park, home to 19,625-foot Mount Logan, Canada's highest peak. Spend the next two nights in Whitehorse, capital of the Yukon and the territorial headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

DAY 5: Whitehorse. Visit to Skagway.
Follow the Trail of '98 over the same mountains that thousands of determined gold seekers scaled on foot in the dead of winter, while heading for the Klondike. From Carcross we suggest an optional train trip on the narrow-gauge Yukon & White Pass Railway to Skagway. Otherwise continue through the mountains by coach to Skagway. Stroll the wooden sidewalks past charming false-front buildings and colourful saloons. Return to Whitehorse in the late afternoon.

DAY 6: Whitehorse - Dawson City.
Head north-west and stop at the Five Finger Rapids, a major obstacle on the Trail of '98. Late this afternoon reach Dawson City, the main centre of excitement after the first gold strike in the Klondike in 1896. Tonight you have reservations at Diamond Tooth Gertie's, a saloon featuring ragtime music, can-can girls and an old-fashioned casino.

DAY 7: Dawson City. Included sightseeing.
A full day to soak up the exciting history of this gold rush town. Highlights on your morning tour include Bonanza Creek, where the first gold strike was made, Robert Service's cabin and the SS Keno, the last sternwheeler to run between Dawson and Whitehorse. This afternoon you'll have the opportunity to 'strike it rich' at gold panning.

DAY 8: Dawson City - Fairbanks.
A long day and well worth it as the scenery is overwhelming. Motor over the 'Top of the World Highway' and re-enter Alaska. Through the village of Chicken and west along the Alaska Highway to view the Trans-Alaska Pipeline at Delta Junction. Evening arrival in Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city.

DAY 9: Fairbanks. Included sightseeing cruise.
Board the Sternwheeler Discovery for a leisurely cruise on the Chena and Tanana Rivers. Listen as the ship's guides discuss the region's wildlife, history and customs. This evening take the optional outing to Alaskaland, a pioneer theme park featuring early 20th century buildings, a museum, and enjoy a delicious Alaska salmon bake.

DAY 10: Fairbanks - Alaska Railroad - Denali National Park.
Board the world famous Alaska Railroad for a memorable journey through untamed wilderness. Sit back in comfort and enjoy spectacular scenery through wide windows. Be sure to take advantage of the domed roof car. Today's ride ends in Denali National Park, dominated by North America's highest peak, 20,320-feet Mount McKinley. The afternoon is free. Tonight join our optional wilderness banquet at an Alaskan cabin.

DAY 11: Denali National Park.
A free day to hike through this stunning National Park, or to take advantage of several optional outings, including a wildlife tour, where anything from grizzly bear or moose to caribou or Dall sheep may be spotted; a raft trip down the Nenana River or a helicopter ride over the park.

DAY 12: Denali National Park - Anchorage.
Head south towards Anchorage with a stop at the Iditarod headquarters, home of the great dog-sled race. Tonight why not have dinner at the unusual Sourdough Mining Company, the perfect finish to a great holiday in Alaska and the Yukon?

DAY 13: Anchorage - UK.
Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.

DAY 14: Home landing in the UK.

Maximum elevation on this tour is 4,470 ft.
Note: Alaska and the Yukon are blessed with exquisite scenery, fascinating attractions, and an extraordinary amount of daylight in the summer months. We take advantage of the extended light in this vast territory, and as a result, some of the travelling days can be long. However, rest assured there are frequent photo and comfort stops.
