Images of Iceland
5 DAYS FROM £664
The late autumn scenery was stunning with vivid colours of gold and pinks on the moor lands. The sunsets were incredible, lighting up the sky for almost an hour. (Being 1o South of the Arctic Circle, the sun sets very slowly).
Our hotel was welcoming and cosy; hot water and heating provided by the geothermally generated electricity. Our Icelandic guide John provided us with a detailed background to the country, from descriptions of the establishment of the world's first parliament, to stories of the most recent volcanic eruptions.
The well organised tour took in the highlights of Iceland's breathtaking scenery, with spectacular waterfalls and of course the world famous geysers and hot bubbling mud pools. We walked on glaciers, and visited one of the worlds top ten beaches (the only one on the list outside the tropics).
Our final visit before returning home was a swim in the Blue Lagoon where we floated in the silica-rich warm water with it's cleaning and energising properties, and yes we did feel ten years younger as a result as promised.
Thank you Archers for such a cleverly designed break, that gave us such an unforgettable insight into this small but fascinating country.
Discover Iceland's charming capital and spectacular natural highlights on this leisurely four-night break.
Included Highlights
The Golden Circle
Gullfoss: The 'Golden Waterfall' is a breathtaking waterfall which drops water 32 metres into a canyon 70 metres deep and 2.5 kilometres wide.
Geysir: The namesake for all other hot springs, was once capable of spurting water 80 metres into the air. Located in a geothermal park full of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents and meandering warm streams. Geysir is now dormant but visitors to the area are kept entertained by Strokkur 'the churn' which erupts every 5-10 minutes.
Thingvellir National Park: The oldest existing Parliament in the world first met here in AD 930, the area continues to be a focal point for the country and Icelanders hold the area in high esteem, gathering here whenever a major event is celebrated.

DAY 3: Reykjavik. At leisure.
The world's northernmost capital is located on a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Overlooked by the majestic Mount Esja, the city enjoys crisp clean air and clear blue skies. The city is one of contrasts, it has the charm and character of a provincial town with colourful and traditional painted houses, and, at the same time, is a forward-thinking and bustling city metropolis. The name Reykjavik was given to the city by its Viking founders and means 'smoky bay' after the steam rising from hot springs all over the city.
During your time at leisure in this unique capital city you will find much to keep you entertained and enthralled. The city is a fascinating fusion of history, culture, art and nature. Be sure to visit the Perlan, Iceland's most unique attraction: a series of water tanks providing hot water to the city that have become popular with tourists for their distinguished revolving restaurant and panoramic walkway offering 360-degree views of the city. Or relax at Tjorn Lake, which stretches from City Hall to the edge of the suburbs, an ideal place for a leisurely shore-side stroll and a haven for nature lovers, being home to over 40 species of birds.
Reykjavik is famed for its nightlife and offers an opera house, several theatres, a symphony orchestra, and concerts with live music that accommodates all tastes. The city can also offer a unique dining experience, some of the city's specialities include fresh seafood, highland lamb and unusual varieties of game. (B)

The waters contain mineral salts which aid relaxation and relieve stress, whilst the white silica mud cleanses, tones and revitalises. Later, continue to Keflavik for your flight to the UK. (B)
