DAY 1: UK - Munich - Zell am See.
Fly to Munich where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Zell am See, for six nights. (D)
DAY 2: Zell am See.
The lively, cosmopolitan resort of Zell am See is one of Austria's prettiest towns and boasts an array of medieval buildings, cobbled streets and lakeside promenades. The day is yours to relax and enjoy the pleasures of this delightful alpine resort, including the town's historic centre, taking a scenic walk or cable car ride, swimming, or a boat trip on the lake. DAY 3: Zell am See - Grossglockner excursion.
Prepare to be amazed on today's included visit to mighty Grossglockner Mountain, Austria's highest peak at 12,458 feet. Drive amidst picturesque scenery to the famous Grossglockner Alpine Road, constructed between 1930 and 1935 and one of the most magnificent of its kind in Europe. Enjoy the spectacular alpine panoramas and a photo stop at the beautiful Edelweissspitze before taking a trip through the impressive Hochtor Tunnel at the road's highest point (8,200ft). Reaching the visitor centre at the mountain mansion of Franz Joseph's Hohe, marvel at the glistening peaks of snow-capped Grossglockner and the sparkling Pasterze Glacier below. The largest glacier in the Eastern Alps, Pasterze is over 5 miles long and up to 1 mile wide. After time to enjoy the stunning panoramas, return to Zell am See. (B, D)
DAY 4: Zell am See - Achensee visit.
Enjoy spectacular views of pristine pastures and lofty mountains on today's included drive to Jenbach, where you'll board the cog and pinion railway for a train ride to Seespitz on beautiful Achensee. The Achenseebahn has connected Jenbach with Lake Achen since 1889, making it the oldest steam-operated cog railway in Europe. Enjoy a leisurely train ride through beautiful Tyrolean mountain landscapes and the Inn Valley to the sparkling waters of Lake Achen. This mirror-like, glacial lake, overlooked by the soaring peaks of the Karwendel Mountains, has been one of the Tyrol's most popular holiday areas for centuries. (B, D)
DAY 5: Zell am See - Zillertal Train ride.
Today, relax aboard another fantastically scenic train journey. Drive via charming Tyrolean towns such as Kitzbühel and Hopfgarten to the small town of Fügen where you'll board the delightful Zillertal train. An original steam locomotive from the turn of the century, Zillertalbahn gently chugs amidst the lush meadows and breathtaking alpine panoramas of the Ziller Valley and houses a buffet car in its 'Crystal Carriage', where approximately 62,000 pieces of crystals can be seen. Reaching Mayrhofen, a pretty little town steeped in rustic charm and surrounded by mountains, enjoy time to explore before returning by road to Zell am See. (B, D)
DAY 6: Zell am See - Salzburg excursion.
Enjoy an included excursion to the historic city of Salzburg today. Immortalised as the film location of 'The Sound of Music', Salzburg is renowned as one of the world's most beautiful cities, with quaint cobbled streets, palaces and churches set beneath the imposing 11th century Hohensalzburg Castle and a splendid Baroque skyline peppered with picturesque spires, domes and turrets. Explore at leisure or join the fascinating optional city tour that ambles through the historic centre to marvel at landmarks such as the magnificent Domplatz Cathedral, Residenzplatz, Festival Hall and medieval Getreidegasse, the cobbled street housing the building where Mozart was born. DAY 7: Zell am See - Munich.
Drive to Munich - the city known as Germany's 'secret capital' - for one night. Why not join this afternoon's optional city sightseeing tour before rounding off your trip with tonight's optional Bavarian evening and dinner. (B)
