Lake Como Resort Holidays
Soak up stunning lake and mountain views on a Lake Como holiday. Beautiful, tranquil Como, Europe’s deepest lake, has attracted celebrities for centuries. Lake Como holidays let you discover magnificent Alpine scenery, elegant villas and gardens, picturesque lakeshore towns and some of the best cuisine in Italy.
Our favourite Lake Como resorts include the romantic lakeshore town of Bellagio. Climb its ancient stepped alleyways and enjoy stunning panoramic views of the lake from Villa Serbelloni. Picture-perfect Menaggio has Alpine-style painted houses around the harbour, overlooked by a ruined Medieval castle. Cadenabbia and Tremezzo are also lovely resorts, and with our choice of elegant Lake Como hotels, your holiday will be blissful.
CADENABBIA On the western lakeside with fine views over to Bellagio, picturesque Cadenabbia is perfectly placed for enjoying everything the lake offers. Shuttered houses and hotels fringe the water alongside a quay where regular ferries stop to take you to all Como's towns and beauty spots. No stay here is complete without visiting nearby Villa Carlotta - a splendid 17th century mansion replete with orange-scented gardens and extravagant, art-filled interiors.
MENAGGIO Delightful Menaggio is one of the main resorts on Lake Como. The heart of the old town centres around Piazza Garibaldi close to Menaggio's harbour, and features many 19th century buildings painted in typically Italian alpine style. Higher up, the town has a more medieval feel with its narrow alleys, steep steps and old stone. It's a beautiful place to explore, with the tree shaded lakeshore promenades bordered by flowers and the well-kept villas, as well as ferries to take you around the lake. You'll find plenty of shops, restaurants and cafés, so you don't have to do anything other than relax.
Transfer time from Milan to Lake Como: 1hr 30 mins approximately.
Out & About
Lake Como is made for leisurely exploring. Topping the list of must-dos is cruising it by ferry, stopping off to explore charming lakeside towns, cypress-studded gardens and scenic mountain footpaths. Don't miss Bellagio, called the 'Pearl' of the Lake for its stepped cobbled lanes and pastel-washed houses. Varenna, meanwhile, is a storybook village tucked into cliffs, while bustling Como boasts an impressive cathedral, walled old town and pretty lakeside promenade.
Activities
By taking a walk around the shoreline of Lake Como, there is so much to take in. Beautifully greenery, awe inspiring architecture and of course, gently lapping water. Should you have your sea or rather lake legs with you, why not take a motorboat ride, board a sailing boat or take a small flight from one of many light aircraft that can be hired.
Shopping
There are many highly fashionable and large stores in areas such as Como, Bellagio and Menaggio, selling stylish clothing, fine silks and beautiful, well-made Italian shoes. All at surprisingly reasonable prices. Also, for those that prefer to delve a little deeper for more traditional items, there are many unique arts and crafts shops in the smaller towns.
Food & Drink
Naturally, Lake Como is renowned for it's fish and of it's five different varieties lavarello is the most popular. In the more mountainous regions surrounding the Lake the tiny alborelle is a wonderful delicacy. The rough bread of Polenta is well worth trying with many of the cooked meats and salamis on offer and cassoeula – stew with pork ribs and cabbage in some cases it is enough for two such is typical Italian generosity. And the perfect accompaniment will always be one of several of the excellent wines from the Valtellina Valley.
