Singapore Holidays - Where Is Singapore?
Singapore geographically lies in Southeastern Asia, nestled between Malaysia and Indonesia
Singapore Holidays - Local History
Part of Johor, the island of Singapore became a British protectorate in 1819. In 1826, Britain merges its colonies in Malaysia and Singapore (Malacca, Penang, Singapore) in an act named the Colony of Straits Settlements. The colony remains part of British India until 1867 when it succeeds and becomes a separate crown colony in 1867.
When Malacca and Penang merge in 1946 into the Federation of Malaya, Singapore goes it's own way and becomes a self - governing country in 1948, with its own parliament by 1955. In 1959 the People's Action Party (PAP) of Lee Kwan Yew take control of Singapore following a somewhat controversial election. The crown colony becomes the State of Singapore in 1959, an autonomous British dependency.
In 1963 Singapore joins up to the new independent federation of Malaysia, but quickly withdraws in 1965, proclaiming the Republic of Singapore. Lee remains prime minister until 1990. Later that year, he was succeeded by Goh Chok Tong who was in charge until 2004, when he finally handed over the reigns of power to the son of Lee, Lee Hsien Loong.
Singapore Holidays - Arab Street
Filled with a vast array of silks, sarongs and other textile goods, Arab Street personifies the modern style of Singapore's Muslim people.
Many such goods, as well as rosaries, flower essences, hajj caps and basketware can be haggled for outside the grand Sultan Mosque, the largest and liveliest Mosque in Singapore, a real spectacle of Muslim faith. Other than this grand spectacle, Arab Street is also home to the tiny yet perfectly formed Malabar Muslim Jama-ath Mosque, an altogether more decorative shrine. There's fine Indian Muslim food to be savoured along nearby North Bridge Road whilst the markets on Bussorah St are especially atmospheric at dusk during Ramadan.
Singapore Holidays - Sentosa Island
Considered the centrepiece park of Singapore, Sentosa Island is a tourist hotspot, due to its self - contained array of marvellous museums, aquariums, beaches (with imported sand), spectacular sporting facilities, fairground rides and a whole host of eateries.
As well as these obviously appealing attractions, Sentosa Park has a novel concept regarding accommodation – you can choose to camp it out in a field or live it up in a luxurious hotel – the choice and budget is for you to decide!
Reachable via a short cable car ride from mainland Singapore, Sentosa Island offers everything you need for an unforgettable Singapore holiday all in one place!
Expect to find sandy white beaches, aqua-bikes, sand-buggies, canoes, windsurfing, swimming and even a golf course amongst the many activities available in this Asian wonderland. As you explore, you will no doubt encounter the magnificent, vivacious flora and fauna and ever – changing scenery and landscape that intersperses the wonderful amenities.
Look out to for ‘Underwater World', Asia's first and largest tropical fish oceanarium, an incredible complex which literally allows you to walk under the ocean via secure opaque tunnels, allowing you to view the 5,000 tropical marine creatures including sharks, eels and huge fish that glide through the local waters.
Other Attractions include the Sentosa Orchid Gardens, with its exotic collection of flora from all over the world, and the Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom Museum, home to one of the largest collections of butterflies in the region with some 2,500 butterflies, as well as insects from more than 50 species including rhino beetles and scorpions.
Singapore Holidays – Jurong Bird Park
If you have an interest in our feathered and flying friends, then you will be engrossed by Jurong Bird Park, home to some 600 species, which makes it by far the most comprehensive bird park in the Asia Pacific.
Special features include the adorable Penguin Parade in a re-created Antarctic setting to the Southeast Asian Birds Aviary featuring a walk-in aviary with simulated tropical thunderstorms, recreating natural habitats as accurately as possible. As well as birds, the park has also recently expanded its scope for sights with the inclusion of the Riverine, a new simulated natural freshwater river habitat featuring over 20 species of ducks, fish and turtles.
Make sure to catch a glimpse of the bird shows on your Singapore holiday featuring flamingos, macaws, cockatoos and even hawks in action – it truly is a magnificent, engrossing experience.
Singapore Holidays – Night Safari
To complete the set of animal attractions (you have already seen sea – life and flying friends) the adventurous Night Safari is for you!
As the sun sets in Singapore, an unfamiliar primal world comes to life. At the Night Safari, expect to come face - to - face with a rhinoceros, witness the hunting call of a pack of howling striped hyenas or watch giraffes gracefully stride in the pristine night.
This incredible nature complex is home to more than 900 animals of 135 exotic species in eight zones re-created to simulate geographic zones like the Southeast Asian rainforest, African Savannah, Nepalese river valley, South American pampas and Burmese jungle.
A beautiful touch to this park is that you can choose either to be slowly escorted round via a tram, or if you prefer, take to the trail and walk within feet of some of the most magnificent beasts on Earth.
Singapore Holidays – Shopping
An ideal shopping arena for those of you that wish to pick up traditional and modern goods all in one fail swoop on a Singapore holiday, Orchard Road bustles with traders waiting to great you at market stalls and in shops. The lively shopping centres sell everything from stylish shoes and classic clothes to precious gems, jewellery and accessories. Should you tire from your shopping exploits, there are plenty of fabulous eateries nearby to rest and relax in and catch a quick bite to eat.
Singapore Holidays – Restaurants
Resulting from a collaboration between Beijing artist/musician Zhang Jin Jie and local restaurateurs, My Humble House is a stylishly designed eatery is bound to get your creative (and digestive) juices flowing!
Dispersed about the shimmering split-level interiors are whimsical curled and high-back furniture, vividly hued throws and curtains, modern artwork, and quirky flatware. Another highlight of this marriage of food and art are the poetic menus, describing dishes in intelligent ways; for instance, "snow drops in the forest" is the clever alias for honey beans with preserved vegetables and dried scallops, of course. Alternatively, there's "smooth as velvet" (braised superior shark's fin), or perhaps "the balmy breeze beckons". Just make sure you order the right dish.
Singapore Holidays - Cuisine
As food is considered a national pastime in Singapore, you would be right to expect their dishes to be both nutritious and delicious – and you would be right!
Even though there is a religiously implied divide considering cuisine in Singapore regarding Muslims not eating pork and Hindus not eating beef, there is, however, a refreshing, mixed cuisine culture about Singapore, and most are accepting of other peoples dietary requirements.
This is reflected best in the common sight of multi – cultural cuisine eateries throughout Singapore. For instance, halal Chinese restaurants that prepare Chinese food in a way that conform to Muslim dietary restrictions are easy to come across.
Regarding typical dishes in Singapore, it is notable that many popular dishes revolve around poultry, including Claypot chicken rice, Curry chicken noodles, Braised duck with rice and Teochew fishball noodles.
Singapore Holidays - Weather
Very similar to Malaysia's climate, Singapore is subject humidity throughout the year. The closest months are March and September, when winds are uncommon.
As a result, temperatures vary from very hot to very, very hot pretty much all year; temperatures have a uniformly high average daytime temperature of 31 ºC (88ºF) and a minimum of 23 °C (73°F) at night throughout the year. Humidity is very high, at an average of 85% throughout the year.
Luckily, there is rainfall throughout the year to calm things. The monsoon season from November to January brings an incredible average of 2360mm (93 inches) of rain. The driest month is July. February is usually sunniest while December has the least sunshine. From April to November, early morning thunderstorms known as ' Sumatras' occur three or four times a month.
