Sorrento Holidays - Where Is Sorrento?

Sorrento is part of Italy and sits on the Sorrento Peninsula in the Neapolitan Riviera , directly between the Bay of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, on the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Sorrento Holidays - Local History

One of the most beautifully situated cities in all of Italy, Sorrento is a picturesque seaside town.
The earliest evidence of human inhabitants on the glorious seaside town of Sorrento was of the Greeks, who fleetingly ruled the island before the Romans colonised it. With the coming of the middle - ages (The 15 th century), Sorrento successfully kept its independence and soon became a prosperous community. A major reason for the success of the Sorrento economy was the extreme success of the exporting of fruits and wine to neighbouring Naples and other parts of Italy.

However, the peaceful society of Sorrento's was destroyed around 1560 with the invasion of the Turks, who plundered homes, destroyed the city and killed many people. As a result, Sorrento was plunged into an economic crisis until the 18th century when Sorrento emerged as a popular tourist destination after the resolute Italians won back their land. Sorrento now thrives on the industries of tourism, textiles and agriculture.

Sorrento Holidays – Correale Museum

Located on the Cape of Cervo contained, the Correale Museum is best described as an exhibition “Without kilometres of corridors in attendance, mansize” – the words of late critic Franco Russoli. Throughout the twenty rooms, there are plenty of unique and rare masterpieces which make for engaging spectacle.

On the ground floor there is an archeological section that displays a wide range of Greek and Roman finds that give an insight into ancient colonisation. Furthermore, there is an in – depth collection of antiques gathered from the Cathedral of St. Renato. The same floor also has a room dedicated to the indigenous poet Tasso; many of his works as well as his funeral mask are on display.

Up on the two upper floors there is an exquisite range of 1700s furniture in Neapolitan and Sicilian style porcelain by Doccia and Giustiniani and an intriguing collection of Venetian glass and statuettes from 1750 by the Royal Capodimonte manufacturer.

With regard to paintings, many walls hold testament to pieces by Neapolitan artists of the 17 th and 18 th centuries, including pieces by Luca Giordano, Salvator Rosa and Giacomo Del Po, as well as pieces from the “School of Posillipo" – Duclere and Giacinto Gigante amongst them. Look out to for the room dedicated to the old masters of Sorrentine marquetry like Damora and Gargiulo – well worth a look.

Sorrento Holidays - Sedil Dominova

An important piece of Sorrento's history, the Sedil Dominova lies in front of the bell tower to the side of Sorrento Cathedral, acting as a permanent shrine to the aristocrats and families who helped form Sorrento, displaying the city coat of arms as well as those of the various families in its interior.

Its architecture is wonderfully ornate, promoting a quadrilateral form with two corner arches in piperno (lava) permitting the view of the interior of the cupola and the end walls with 18th century frescoes. The pilasters and polystyle arches with their capotals are in archaic style.

In typically extravagant yet classical Italian style, the 17th century cupola is formed by green and yellow majolica roof tiles.

Pretty much all dishes use the regional olive oil, which is thought to attribute towards the long average lifespan through helping combat heart disease. As for drinks, the people of Sorrento enjoy a tipple of wine, limoncello and coffee.

As well as seafood, Sorrento has an ancient cheese tradition, and indeed it offers tours of traditional cheese creameries, churning out such aromatic delights as burrini caciottine (little cacciotta cheese) stuffed with a delicate butter puree and the caprignetti, small little balls obtained by a cheese cream.
