Sri Lanka MapSri Lanka: Pearl Of The Indian Ocean

Steeped in the traditions of its British colonial past, this pearl in the ocean, fringed by 1000 miles of coastline has so much to offer. The tropical beaches offer obvious temptation, but inland you'll uncover a profusion of green forests, paddy fields, spice gardens and an amazing array of tropical fruits and wildlife. Maginificent ancient ruins and statues remind you of civilisations past, whilst modern-day ‘Ceylon' will welcome you to a feast for all the senses.

Beruwela

Beruwela is near a small fishing village, attractively sited on a rocky headland. The palm-shaded beaches, lapped by turquoise waters and protected by offshore bars, are great for watersports enthusiasts and the hotels are well spread out. This is the beginning of the more developed stretch of coastline and around 30 kilometres of sandy beach.

Transfer time from airport: 3 hours approx.

Marawila

Marawila is a small village that lies 35 kilometres north of Negombo and about 60 kilometres from Colombo, and has a superb swathe of sandy beach stretching for miles. As a traditional fishing village it only has a few shops and bars, and is located in the midst of acres of lush tropical greenery. The area includes a bird sanctuary and an eco-reserve, so this is an ideal haven to retreat to and enjoy all things that are good about nature.

Transfer time from airport: 1 hour approx.
