Included today: Guided sightseeing, see Fisherman's Bastion. Spanning the banks of the Danube, Budapest is one of Eastern Europe's liveliest cities. Whether you're seeing the sights, shopping for handcrafted embroidery or Herend porcelain, or basking in the coffee house culture over a rich cream cake in the renowned Gerbeaud Café, Budapest's unique energy is positively palpable. On your guided tour of the city, see Heroes' Square as well as the massive hilltop castle complex with its remarkable Fisherman's Bastion and 11th-century Matthias Church. Be sure to take note of the city's eight bridges— famous sights in and of themselves—which connect ancient Buda on the right bank with Pest on the left. In your free time this afternoon you may want to walk across Chain Bridge, built in 1849 and a symbol of Budapest; visit St. Stephen's Basilica with marvellous views of the city from its viewing platform; or stroll along Váci utca, the main shopping street.

Included today: Guided sightseeing. Once the centre of the mighty Habsburg Empire, Vienna has much to offer. The lavish Hofburg Palace, the impressive Vienna Opera House, the majestic Ring Boulevard and awe-inspiring St Stephen's Cathedral are just a few of the sights you will see during your tour. Shop on the Kärntnerstrasse and enjoy Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel in a local café. Tonight, an optional concert is available.

Durnstein - Melk

Included today: Visit to Dürnstein and Melk Abbey. Dürnstein, situated in the heart of the Wachau wine region, is known for the magnificent baroque, blue Stiftskirche built in the 1700s. The main street of this small town, with a population of less than 1,000 people,is lined with 16th-century residences and charming cobblestone streets. A local guide will take you on a walking tour and tell you the tale of Richard the Lionheart, who was imprisoned in the castle whose ruins still stand above the town. Then, cruise through the beautiful Wachau Valley to reach Melk after lunch. Visit the magnificent 11th-century Benedictine Abbey that towers over the town and is one of Europe’s largest. It houses an ornate library with over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Words cannot describe the splendour of its church with its frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. This evening, you’ll be able to sample some of the region’s famous wines.

Passau

Included today: Guided walk in Passau. Today, choose from full-day optional excursions to Salzburg, taking in some of The Sound of Music sights; the popular 'Romantic Austria' tour; or to Ceský Krumlov in the Czech Republic, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Re-join your ship in Passau in the early evening. Alternatively, you may choose to stay on the ship and relax as you cruise to Passau, uniquely located where the Inn, Ilz, and Danube Rivers converge. Passau is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses. St. Stephen's Cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Baroque architecture, houses one of the world's largest church organs with 17,774 pipes. Take in the highlights on the included guided walk.

Regensburg

Included today: Guided walk. Regensburg is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval cities. Architectural highlights include the Old Town Hall and Porta Pretoria — gates to an ancient Roman fort built in 179AD. The city is the capital of Upper Palatinate, a bustling university town, and one of Bavaria's cultural centres. It is here you will find Germany's oldest restaurant, the 12th century Historische Wurstküche (Old Sausage Kitchen).

Roth - Nuremberg

Included today: Choice of guided sightseeing or Nuremberg Rally Grounds tour; beer tasting. This morning, dock in Roth and after breakfast join a guided sightseeing tour of the city. This delightful Bavarian town, with its half-timbered houses and market square, is also a centre of textile manufacturing.  or you may prefer to choose a guided sightseeing tour of nearby Nuremberg. Although 90% of Nuremberg's Old Town suffered extensive damage during World War II, much of it has been restored to the glory it once knew as the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Marvel at this thousand year-old city's medieval fortifications, extraordinary Gothic churches and the Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), or join a more specialised Nuremberg Rally Grounds tour.

This morning, arrive in medieval Bamberg, former residence of one of Germany's most powerful imperial dynasties and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guided walking tour takes in its historic centre, including the great 13th-century Romanesque cathedral and the fascinating Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), built on an island in the middle of the Regnitz River when the bishop refused to give the townspeople land for a town hall. This afternoon, cruise gently along the Main River as you head for Würzburg.

Included today: Visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum; cruise through the Rhine Gorge. Today, arrive in Rüdesheim, a quintessential Rhine Valley wine town. Visit Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum, where you'll see and hear a large collection of self-playing calliopes and music boxes from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Enjoy a special treat, then head downstream from Rüdesheim, through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, the most beautiful stretch of river. Here, ancient castles stand sentry on lofty cliffs rising 400 feet above the waters. Cruise past the legendary Lorelei rock, where echoes of enchanted siren song lured unwitting sailors to their doom.

Cologne is one of Germany's largest cities, with a river skyline dominated by the soaring twin spires of its magnificent Gothic cathedral. The Old Town offers up a great choice of cafés, shops and taverns so be sure to try a Kölsch in one of the many taverns and shop for a bottle of 4711, the original 'eau de cologne'.

Age Restriction

Avalon Waterways do not accept bookings for children under 8. There are no special arrangements or activities on board for children and they cannot accept bookings from unaccompanied children under 18 years of age and any travellers under this age must share the adult’s accommodation.

Dietary Requirements

Avalon Waterways will try their best to accommodate dietary requirements if they are mentioned at the time of booking.

Disabled Facilities

Passengers must report any disability to Avalon before any reservation is made so that Avalon may advise whether they and/or their suppliers for any particular holiday are able to accommodate the passengers. Avalon may rely on the information provided to them by the passengers regarding the details of any disability in order to make a decision as to whether the passengers can be accommodated. Avalon will make reasonable attempts to accommodate the special needs of disabled passengers, in accordance with the applicable laws. Not all sightseeing stops/sites accommodate wheelchairs and some locations and sightseeing activities require extensive standing, sitting or walking. Avalon is not responsible for any missed activities due to a participant’s inability to participate within a group. All of the ships have lifts, however they do not service the SkyDeck. Additionally most stateroom doors and bathrooms are not wide enough to allow access by standard wheelchairs, and bathrooms and other doorways may be fitted with coamings. For safety reasons passengers cannot be carried on ramps in ports when the ship is docked. In certain circumstances, they may ask that a disabled person or person with reduced mobility be accompanied by another person capable of providing any assistance required.

Dress Code

The dress code for dinner is casual and comfortable. The Welcome and Farewell Dinners give you a chance to dress up but are not formal.

On shore, Avalon includes a great range of comprehensive sightseeing excursions led by knowledgable Certified Local Guides. They also provide individual personal audio headsets to ensure you still have the freedom to roam through some of Europe's most famous attractions without missing a moment of fascinating commentary.

If you'd like to experience something slightly off the beaten track, they offer unique alternative excursions in select destinations. In many cities they also give you a choice of sightseeing pace: 'Traditional' to see all the major sights, 'Leisurely' available on walking tours when you want to take it slower, and 'Independent' allowing you to explore on your own. Have a chat with your Cruise Director to learn about the available options.

A spacious, open-seating dining room; dinners become the perfect complement to a day of discovery. Avalon craft their recipes using high-quality, prime-cut beef, fresh fish, and an accompaniment of hand-picked local fruits, vegetables, and garden greens.
