The southern French city of Marseilles has been a major Mediterranean harbour for more than 2,500 years. Leading off the harbour is the city's most famous street, La Canebiere, a broad bustling boulevard, shaded by rows of plane trees.

Day 3

Genoa

The vibrant Italian city of Genoa circles a fine harbour and once rivalled Venice as a maritime power. The birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its captivating old town is threaded with 'caruggi' - steep medieval lanes dotted with rich churches.

Day 4

Civitavecchia (for Rome)

Today, don't miss an optional excursion to witness the glory that is Rome. Italy's capital overflows with Roman, Renaissance and Baroque treasures, making it a sightseer's dream. Witness the vast and glorious St Peter's Square, the majestic St Peter's Basilica and splendid Clemente's Basilica before enjoying a guided tour of the mighty Colosseum, where gladiators once fought for their lives, cheered on by 50,000 baying spectators.

Day 5

Palermo

Originally a Carthaginian stronghold in the 5th Century BC, the Sicilian capital is set in a valley called the 'Golden Shell' and combines a modern bustling metropolis with a traditional old quarter. It has a good selection of fine architecture and some of Italy's best museums.

Day 6

Valletta

Ruled by the medieval Knights of St John for 270 years, sun-drenched Malta has an intensely warm-hearted culture. The honey-stoned capital, Valletta, fringes a spectacular Grand Harbour and bursts with stepped alleyways, bustling cafés and rich monuments. Today there's free time to admire its gems, perhaps wandering its Upper Barracca Gardens or marvelling at the sumptuous St John's Co-Cathedral, which houses Caravaggio's masterpiece, 'The Beheading of St John the Baptist'. Also see the Grand Master's Palace, home to Malta's government for four centuries.
