A short drive to Toledo, the ancient Castilian capital, which is spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River. Enjoy sightseeing with a local guide with an included visit to St Thomas' church in the old walled city, made famous in El Greco's painting. Even now it is like a great open-air museum of Spanish history and art. Cross the Guadalquivir River for the olive and orange groves of the rolling Andalucian hills and on to Granada at the foot of the majestic Sierra Nevada.
This morning enjoy an optional visit with a local guide to the Alhambra, a summer complex built by Moorish kings (please note that entrance to the Nasrid palace is not guaranteed). Later, enjoy a wine tasting session in Montilla. Continue to your hotel in Cordoba this afternoon where you will stay overnight.
Visit Ecija, an ancient rural town, home to several magnificent baroque churches and of a well-preserved Roman mosaic to be found in the 'ajuntamiento' (town hall). Then, drive through the stunningly scenic hills of the Andalusian countryside to vibrant, festive, Seville.

This morning, cross into Portugal and the fertile plains of the Alentejo, heading to the beautiful hilltop town of Evora. With its fortified walls, cobbled streets, arches and brilliant white houses, Evora is a delightful Moorish city. Continue to Lisbon for two nights.
Henry the Navigator made Lisbon the 15th century 'mistress of the seas'. You'll see his monument, the Belem Tower, the Moorish Citadel, the impressive Black Horse Square and other highlights on the sightseeing excursion with a local guide. In the afternoon why not make an optional trip to Sintra and coastal Cascais?
This morning, journey via Fatima and its world famous pilgrimage sanctuary to Coimbra. Continue to Porto on the banks of the River Duoro famous for its port merchants.
Enjoy a city sightseeing tour with a local guide. An optional excursion is available in the afternoon. Dinner is served in a local restaurant this evening.
Return to Spain by way of Fuentes de Onoro and Ciudad Rodrigo. Reach the ancient and beautiful university town of Salamanca and it's charming Plaza Mayor. Stay overnight.
Leave Salamanca for the fortified town of Avila and an orientation tour and visit to St Theresa's convent. Continue to Segovia, a medieval town picturesquely located on a rocky hill. Cross the boundary between new and old Castile to arrive in Madrid for two nights.
Not only because it is the capital of Spain, but because it is situated 2,180 feet above sea level, the Spaniards say Madrid is the nearest thing to heaven. Enjoy the main highlights with a local guide.

The brochure was fully accurate but the trip packed in much more, including a few nice surprises. There was plenty of free time and we came away with a more thorough appreciation of these great countries.
