The sparkling Mediterranean Sea serves as your backdrop as you explore the historical treasures of Northern Cyprus. Wander the ruins of the ancient city of Salamis, roam the grand fortresses of Kyrenia and stroll the winding alleyways of one of Europe's few remaining divided capitals.
Extend your stay by 7 nights at a selection of hotels.
Fly to Larnaca where you will be met and transferred to Famagusta and your hotel for three nights.
Begin today with visits to the Monastery of Barnabas and the museum at the Monastery of Apostolos Vamavas before heading to the ancient city of Salamis. With its vast marble columns surrounding a gymnasium pool and baths, Salamis is a fantastic example of what life may have been like centuries ago. Later, return to Famagusta, a city laced with a warren of small shops selling local produce from silver and copperware to ceramics and fresh fruits.
Venture to the island's north-eastern tip today and the Karpaz Peninsula - also known as the panhandle of Cyprus. Owing to its unique flora and fauna, the region has been declared a protected natural reserve. Enjoy views of spectacular golden beaches and perhaps meet the wild donkeys on the way. Later, visit St Andrew monastery, an extremely important site for Greek Orthodox pilgrims, before driving through the idyllic countryside to Kantara Castle. This crusader castle, 630m above sea level, was built in the Middle Ages to protect the island from enemy attacks. From here, there are splendid views over the peninsula.
Nicosia, Lefkosa in Turkish, is the capital of Cyprus and the island's biggest city. Nicosia is also the last divided capital in Europe, since the fall of the Berlin wall. Admire the city's oriental charm during a walking tour of the historical centre and explore sites such as Kyrenia Gate, the Ottoman caravanserai, Selimiye Mosque and the covered market. There is free time to explore the city's two sides (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot) at leisure before visiting a pottery workshop, where professional artists reproduce Bronze Age items. Later, continue to Kyrenia for four nights.
Today is free for you to relax and enjoy Kyrenia. Alternatively, join an optional excursion to Paphos, which used to be the Roman administrative capital of Cyprus. Paphos boasts some of the most important and impressive archaeological sites on the island including many UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Visit two of the island's great castles today. First, take in the unique St Hilarion Castle set some 2000 feet above sea level. Doubtlessly the largest fortress of the island, its location up Kyrenia Mountains offers a breath-taking panoramic view over the Kyrenia coastline. St Hilarion Castle is a crusader castle but is known for having inspired Walt Disney's Snow White Castle. Next, continue to the famous Abbey of Bellapais, the 'Abbey of Peace'. Built by the Franks on the mountains' feet, the whole edifice is a masterpiece of Gothic art.
Located in a fertile alluvial plain, the region of Güzelyurt (or Morphou) on the west coast is often called the 'Fruit garden of Cyprus'. The Turkish word Güzelyurt translates as 'beautiful country'. Visit St Mamas Monastery, built in the 18th century over the tomb of the saint - said to be the patron saint of tax evaders. Next door, the Güzelyurt archaeology and natural history museum feature a remarkable collection of archaeological finds dating back to 8bc. Later, admire exquisite floor mosaics in the ancient city of Soli, whose history dates to 7bc when Solon, a famous philosopher of Hellenistic antiquity, suggested King Philokypros base his capital there.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.
Famagusta: Salmis Bay Conti Resort;
Kyrenia: Bellapais Monastery.
Tour hotels will be as specified or alternatives of a similar standard.
excellent range. days a little too packed with antiquities needed more spare time
Nice tour - lousy hotel . See previous comments about unsuitability, steps, smells , poor food and closed pool.
Value for money. Choise of airport departures was a plus/
The tour itself was fine and Salik the tour director parachuted in did a great job considering he was basically firefighting the whole time. 4 drivers and 3 buses in 5 days touring. Daily Itineraries changed at short notice and a Hotel change all combined to make us think what next
Whilst I may not have chosen to go on the optional tour as there were insufficient numbers on the tour this wasn't available - which would have been disappointing if I had wanted to go.
I am saying good but it was not as it was written in our booklet.we were suppose to stay 4 nights in Salamis Bay cinti hotel and 3 nights at hotel Bellapias monastery village but it was other way round.it was changed without prior information.The guide needs more training and stick to the program according to the booklet.He could not manage to take us couple of places as he said the booklet is not updated.We are travelling for past many year with your company but last few trips were not as good as it used to be.
