Mr Nicholas Adams

Both our hotels had been changed and whilst the first hotel, Grand Hotel Dino was lovely and probably similar (or better, we were told) to the original hotel, our second hotel NH Pontevecchio was not a holiday hotel. It did not have a pool. It was not in a good location (a long way from Como) the food was poor (no choice), and it was in Lecco not Como. Our boat trip excursion on Lake Como should have been re-organised to take into account the new location of our hotel which would have avoided the need to spend 4 hours on the coach on the day of our short boat trip. We were disappointed generally.

The holiday itinerary was varied and very enjoyable. Our tour guide was great; she was always helpful and cheery despite dealing with some awkward customers! I have given 4 stars. because the hotel food was very average.

Unable to study the optional trips till we arrived on the tour. Great emphasis was made about boat trips, they were nothing exceptional, destinations by boat were not interesting, though others who liked being brainwashed with dates may have been. Train rides and cable car were OK First hotel was good the second definitely not so good, why do the evening meals have to be so late and so so slow.?

Mrs Judith Powell

Lovely holiday , tour manager Andrea was excelllent, very knowledgeable and helpful. Hotel Dino in Maggiore was first class in every way, but Hotel Como not so good. The room was fine and very clean, but it lacks in comfortable loung and public seating areas. The restaurant staff were unhelpful almost to the point of being rude and the food was very poor with no choice of menu at all for evening meal, I would not stay at that hotel again.

Lake Como area - Villa Balbianello - Bellagio - Lake Como area

Day
6

A favourite of Shelley and Wordsworth, the delights of Lake Como are many and varied and this morning you can enjoy a private boat tour of the beautiful 18th century Villa del Balbianello, one of the finest villas surrounding the lake. It features a renowned collection of art as well as stunning gardens with a series of manicured terraces full of fragrant roses and colourful borders. The boat then moves on to the elegant and exclusive resort of Bellagio which, with its idyllic location on a promontory on the lake, is often described as the most beautiful town in Italy. Once the haunt of European monarchs, today the attractive pastel-coloured buildings, line the lake shore and narrow cobbled streets and lanes climb their way to the hilly centre. Awash with colourful flowers Bellagio cannot be bettered for a long lazy lunch in one of the many lakeside restaurants, followed by a stroll amongst the many typically formal Italian gardens. Spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace before returning by boat.

Meals included:

  • Breakfast

Lake Como area - Tirano - St. Moritz (Bernina Express) - Lake Como area

Day

Be prepared for a day of spectacular scenery and extraordinary Swiss engineering. Ascend the Valtellina, a classic alpine valley with soaring peaks rising steeply on both sides, to Tirano to board the famous Bernina Express. One of the slowest 'express' trains in the world, this remarkable Swiss train twists upwards in an amazing sequence of spirals, loops and tunnels to the summit at Ospizio Bernina, the highest station in Europe. Here, you are surrounded by stunning vistas over snow-clad peaks and ice-cold glaciers . Your descent is through the pretty pastures and dense pine forests to the chic resort of St Moritz, home of the famous Cresta Run toboggan track. You'll have time for a spot of window shopping or perhaps afternoon tea and cake. Listen carefully to the locals and you may notice them speaking an unusual language, Romansch, an ancient and little known Latin tongue. Your return journey takes you through yet more spectacular scenery to the Lake Como area in time for dinner.
